Mark,
Thanks for the post; I wasn't aware of this. I'm going to have to start digging into this as it sounds interesting. The funny part is that two years ago, people were badmouthing Savage. They're ugly, they'll never compete, their barrels are rotten, their triggers are awful, were just were just some of the complaints. Savage listened to their clients, not their accountants. The Accu-Trigger is a big improvement. They have more rate of twist offerings than any other manufacturer I know of. They are continually striving for improvement and have earned a following.

Not everyone wants to shoot benchrest. Not everyone wants to shoot 6 PPC in competition. Not everyone wants to invest in a custom rifle. There is a large customer base of shooters that want to shoot as well as possible in a factory platform and I don't know of any other company offering the range of products Savage offers.

I own blueprinted Remingtons with Hart, Kreiger barrels, Jewell triggers, sleeved bolts, Leupold scopes, etc. They are all switch barrel rigs I use for varmint hunting and paper punching. They are all capable of extreme accuracy. I also have a Savage single shot smithed by Fred Moreo that I am extremely pleased with.

Keep coming up with the info.

I absolutely agree Lou. Later I'll try to remember to post the link to a lengthy "Essay" I wrote for a fellow over on the the Smith & Wesson forum regarding why I chose a Savage 10FCP over Remington 700, et al, or/and didn't go with a strict "Bench" gun.

Cheers,

Mark

Mark,
Thanks; I would be interested in reading your post. Please keep updating with your IOR Valdada scope experiences, data, quirks, etc. as one is on my wish list. I'm looking at their 9 X 36 Tactical.

Sincerely,

Greetings Lou. Sorry it took me so long to respond. Alas, I searched and searched and searched some more but I can’t find the “Essay” I posted on why I went with the Savage. Basically it comes down to the quality and features out of the box.

I wanted an out of the box rifle that is technically capable of hitting a target at 1000 yards, even if I’m not able to do so at this point. And, I didn’t want to go the custom rifle route. So it was determined I needed a 1:10 twist to stabilize 168 or 175 grain bullets which would have the best chance of accomplishing the 1000 yard goal.

I looked at and compared Howa, CZ, Remington, and Savage. I love my Howa 1500 .223, but the 1500 in .308 is a 1:12. Ditto the CZ. And Remington. The only one with a factory 1:10 barrel is Savage. The rubber or plastic stocks on the Remmy’s really turned me off, so I figured if I went with the Remmy, just to get it on par with an out of the box Savage it would cost an additional $700.00 or so (New trigger, stock, bedding, smithing). And it still would only have a 1:12 barrel. So I went with Savage.

I found an older post you made, so as it echo’s my thoughts exactly let me quote you here-

Many people have slammed Savage on these very posts over the past several years. Comments like they were ugly, would never compete, etc. seemed to be the norm. I don't think any Savage owners were claiming they would be competing against custom built PPC's but were claiming that a Savage platform could be made into a very economical and accurate package. Not everyone who frequents this site has the desire or economic backing to compete against the top names but many of us like to shoot as accurately as possible within our budgets. Many of us avail ourselves of the knowledge and experience many seasoned shooters share and fit those pieces into our own game. The Savage platform with all the usual accuracy pieces will probably take care of a large population of accuracy minded shooters and Savage is to be commended for listening to it's customer base. They have more chamberings, rates of twist, and semi custom features than any factory rifle I'm aware of. We'll be hearing much more about Savage in the future.

Exactly. I know this isn't a custom gun, but that wasn't my intent. I wanted an accurate, fun out of the box shooter. Ugly? I don’t think so. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose. Here’s a couple pix of my 10FCP:

"And there she was, as coolly deadly a piece of weaponry as I'd ever laid eyes on."

I know that some time back, Accurate Innovations and Savage were working on an aluminum bedding block stock design and that AI has been working on a synthetic stock that would incorporate the aluminum bedding block. I don't know if this stock is the result but it certainly looks that way. AI makes some really good wooden hunting stocks with an aluminum bedding block here in the U.S. The last I heard, the synthetics were to be imported. FWIW---Mike Ezell

Yes, It's what it's all about. Fun/Accuracy... That Savage has just about the amount of accuracy options (aftermarket parts) as a Rem. It's growning faster and faster. You made a solid choise.
Have fun...!
