hello. i think i made my questions about the .308 at 500 - 1000 yds a little crazy, but i was looking at a savage .308 and wondering if it had potential to shoot 1000 yds as is or would it need some tampering like a better barrel? ay input would be great. thanks

The Savage rifle in .308 would be an excellent all round rifle, especially to start with, ammo is common. What the other members were saying is still true, for 1,000 yd competition, the .308 Win. will be at a disadvantage against cartridges with a higher velocity and better ballistic coefficient. That being said, with a Savage, you can easily change barrels to something better later. The best part is that you can start shooting without having to spent a great deal of money.

308 600yd.

hi tech it's me again i stand corrected it was late and my eyes were playing tricks on me when i posted . i agree with the short comings of the 308 cartridge at 1000yd. thank goodness we have 600yd. bench to shoot . i believe the ibs record is somewhere around .385 of an inch . and it was shot with 308 win. now as for the savage you take a chance of getting a good one or a great one . i have built rem. and savages for 1000yd and 600yd. comp. currently the savages are out shooting alot of rem. and custom actions . last year i had a shooter ranked 6th in ibs shooting two savages . now they were not 308 but they were savage actions . as for factory savage the model that i mention in 6.5x284 has won ibs shoots when it was factory .it has since been rechambered but still has a factory savage barrel on it . at 600yd he shoots sub 2.00 groups at1000yd. he has shot 5.048 ibs .308 not the ideal cal. but you have to start somewhere savage also makes 6.5 x284 and 6 br norma. hope this helps . the rifler
