HI all!
I picked this gun up several years ago. I have done nothing with it but buy brass and dies. It is set up as an 60's or 70's BR gun. Single shot
Questions??
1. Who was Womack??
2. Groups to expect?
3. Value of the Sako Riihimaki??
Thanks for the help.

Womack

The late Mr. Womack was a gunsmith from Shreveport, LA. His speciality was target rifles built on Model 52 Winchester actions. He was quite well known in the 1950's, but continued to build rifles for many years. He lived to be almost 100 years old and stayed active for most of those years.

The first really accurate rifle that I owned was a Model 70 Winchester that he rebarrelled with a Douglas Timken Steel barrel. This one was a heavy barrel chambered for the .220 Swift. It featured a heavy wooden laminated stock and weighed ~ 14 pounds. Mr. Womack did quality work. Good shooting.... James

Thom,

I Googled Riihimaki & checked out some of the images available. From those, it seems that your action is the Sako L46, the precursor of the L461. According to De Haas, it was made with a single shot variant with a pinned plate blanking the action's magazine cutout, though that would be a simple custom modification in itself. It also had a clone of the M70 Winchester trigger, rather than the morticed falling sear of the later L461 & a square bolt shroud with a safety on it.

I suspect that once used for a custom rifle, it would be less attractive than an original rifle to Sako collectors.

John,
I had one in 222 and had to manufacture both the sear and the bolt release lever. Thank goodness for wire EDM.
