Your opinion is a Sako L61R 7MM mag any good, or better than a Remington 700 or Winchester 70?
They want $1395 for it.

Maybe, maybe not, U gotta shoot it. Is it a Finnbear or Deluxe? Has it been altered? What is condition of wood, bore and metal? Scope?

Like new, are close to it. Clean rifling, bolt action works, good clean all around. (finnbare) no alterations. Has a cheap A** scope “Tasco”

I love my old Sako medium action 243. That said, I've seen two Sako receivers of that vintage that had been split like a banana peal from some shooting "accident". I've never seen a 700 split like that.

One of the split Sako's was in a local shop and the other was in some pictures on this forum where the point was the safety aspects of the Sako extractor.

I have examined a Sako .30-06 that was really overloaded.
The barrel left the reciever when the action ring blew.
The bolt was 1/2 open but the rails were bent stopping the travel.
Possibly the trigger was o.k.

When the "reloader" had gone to the store to purchase his powder he asked for H-450 and was sold WW-450 LS shotgun powder instead.

He loaded 60 gr and a 180 gr bullet.

He was in the store to buy another rifle -only one finger was hurt.
He said that this time he would use factory ammunition !!

Just what do you think a Remington 700 action would do if you did the same thing to it ?

Stonewall,
Don't mistake what I wrote. Sako's are good, high quality, rifles. Your example just proves it's hard to make anything fool proof, because fools are so damn engenius. If I could get a Sako at a good price, I'd jump at it, but they usually go for a premium.

Just saying though, there are a lot more 700's around than Sako's & I have not seen a similar banana peel blow up with a 700.

What I need to know is a Sako LR61R better than a Remington 700 or Winchester 70 target shooting 500+ yards 7MM Mag

There were Sako heavy barrel 7mm Rem Mags but the L61 series are fine hunting rifles.

Just exactly what do you want to do with this rifle ?

"target shooting 500+ yards"
More information would help get a response.

Side by side will the Sako LR61R shoot a tighter pattern than my Winchester model 70? 26” barrow.
Is it a higher quality rifle? $1395 seems a bit high USED when you can get a Winchester or Remington used for less than $500, there must be something special about the Sako. That model of Sako was made in 1972/73 my Winchester was made in 1999. the sako I am looking at is in exlent shape.

I have actions from all three in this discussion. They are all good, but I have found that you get what you pay for. I have built 10+ rifles on older Sako actions and had them all checked for being true before installing a new barrel. Not one of them needed to be worked on. Can't say that about the other two. They come with a good trigger, recoil lug, and have a nice base for bedding. Asking if it will out shoot , well there are too many variables. Pure factory out of the box, YES. Shot two in 1000yd for a while before I could afford a custom action. Won a couple of matches and a few relays. I think Sako is a better action. But that is my opinion. you have to form your own.

Why in the world would someone pay $1395 for what amounts to a factory donor action. That is into custom action territory.
