Ruger 10-22 ammo

My son-in-law pruchased one of these little gems and is trying to find which brand of ammo seems to shoot the best groups. I shoot bench rest and have no experience with these guns. Is there some site which would provide some info. I am aware that guns of the same manafacterer react differently with different brands of ammo.

Best to avoid the faster ammo if tight groups is the goal. You can find slower loads and some of them are inexpensive, but the best of these loads will cost more in order to get the tightest velocity statistics.

There are many to list, but some of the more popular inexpensive ammo for a 10 22 these days is along the lines of Wolf, and CCI. They make subsonic loads in several loads.

Once you get past CCI and Wolf, you end up with something like Eley fairly quick. Best to try some of the Wolf and CCI standard velocity loads first.

Been there with my 10-22 on squirrels. I've been using Eley 10x and discovered that particular type sometimes would not eject properly on a 10-22. I went to another Eley type with just a tad more Velocity. That one is called "semi-auto."
It's just fast enough to properly eject empties, yet slow enough to give much improved accuracy, (considering from a standard 10-22 that has not been accurized) Be prepared to spend $$ for this ammo.
I installed a "Kidd " trigger which had a dramatic effect along with the Eley ammo.
More than good enough for head shots on squirrels at 25-35 yds.
You should perhaps understand, that this trigger is $289.95 ! I never regretted it.
A pure pleasure to squeeze one off.
 
Right now with the "grabbing" going on you will be lucky to find any 22 rimfire ammo.

On the Ruger 10-22's, and I have a couple, CCI mini Group seems to be the best for the money.

On the trigger,Volquartsen makes a good one but it is about $260. He also makes several other "trick" components for the little 10-22.
You can put enough money in that little bugger to buy a small farm and 20 head of cattle!! He even sells a few already tricked, some run almost $4,000.

They are fun to shoot though.

Nothing too good for squirrel shootin Jerry. Also had a thumbhole stock on it.
Mine was a '67 Canadien Centenial. Still got it too.
 
Wolf Match Target works pretty well in many 10-22s.

Another good one for me is the Federal Automatch. The Federal works well in the 10-22 and very well in my Ruger semi pistols.

That may well be, but the Eley's that run at about 980 or just over that won't always eject without jamming the empty on closure of the bolt. Been there..

Never been intensively into very high accuracy rimfire. I did buy a pretty good Remington 541X from DCM a while back and bought some Eley and Lapua stuff to test that out. High dollar rimfire stuff is wasted on my more or less stock 10-22 that does mostly plinking and offhand shooting work. So never tried those types in it.

Is there a lighter aftermarket recoil spring for use with the light target loads? As much custom stuff as is made for 10-22's, I'd think so. Failing that, maybe something like the several boxes (325 rounds per) of Federal Auto-Loader Match that I have. My 22 pistols love that stuff.
