Roy Oines Memorial IBS Two Gun 9-10/9-11

Al Nyhus

"It'll never work!"
The weekend of 9-10/9-11 will be the first Roy Oines Memorial Two Gun event at the newly remodeled Holmen Rod and Gun Club at Holmen, Wi. Saturday will feature the 6 Power guns (Hunter and Varmint Hunter) at 100 and 200. Sunday is the VfS class at 100 and 200. Your 6 Power and VfS score are combined for the coveted Two Gun Score award.

The Holmen range has recently completed an extensive construction project that leveled the range out (no need for super high flag poles at 100) and added benches. The scenery is great and the weather forecast is for mid-high 70's. Holmen has been my favorite range in our region and it will be great to be back there again.

Roy was a fixture on the IBS and NBRSA Hunter 'circuit' for many years until his sudden passing in 2010. Roy also ran the IBS tournaments at the Holmen club and donated untold hours of his time to the club and other shooting related events in the area. He was a talented gunsmith and machinist, a good friend to many and a true gentleman in every sense of the word. As well, he was a past winner of the prestigous Van Dyne NBRSA State Hunter Championships and at one time held the IBS Two Gun Score National Record.

Roy is on the left in this photo. And as usual, he's holding a large share of the weekends awards.

There are a lot of shooters in a days drive of Holmen who have the skills to take home the 2 gun have their names on the first plaque on that trophy. They had ALL better be there next weekend. This is NOT a match to miss.

Al,
Good luck to you all. Hope there is a good turnout and you all have a good time remembering a dear friend. --Greg

I spoke with Roy's long time traveling pard and best buddy, Craig Nagel last evening. Craig and many other club members have been working hard to get the range ready. Shooters are headed to Holmen from Wisconsin, Iowa, Kansas, South Dakota and the wilds of Missouri.

A few more of Roy:

This one from Webster City, Iowa. Roy winning...again!

Roy on the left. This was at Porcupine, S.D. for the NBRSA Hunter Nationals. Chad Schmidt behind Roy (green shirt), Craig Nagel (red shirt) and Richard Hunnewell (yellow shirt). It was so hot there...this is where Craig and I coined the phrase Porcupine Stuck Butt Syndrome (P.S.B.S.)...'cuz every time someone got up they're be pullin' their jeans out of their butts! Roy laughed so hard at that...it makes me smile every time I think about it!

Roy on the far right. Mainville, Pa. 2003 IBS Score Nationals. To Roy's right is Randy Perkowski, Craig Nagel (center with dark blue shirt) and 'Hammerin' Hank Kulhawick on the left.

Good shootin'. :) -Al

Thanks for posting all the pictures Al. I hope Holmen has a great turnout this weekend.

May I tell a Roy story? It was one of my first tournaments. We were at Webster City and I had the pleasure of shooting next to Mr. Oines. Before the match started, I was getting everything set up - checking this, checking that, standing up, sitting down, etc. My set up was going to be perfect. The whole time, Roy was watching me and had this evil smile. I didn't know who he was so just said "Hi" and continued on. When I got all done (about 10 min later) he finally spoke. He asked "shoot much?"
LaVern Nelson, who was on the other side of me, then informed me that my barrel had to be beyond the bench. I think Roy was still laughing about that after the 3rd match.

Have a great time this weekend guys.

Will the range be open Friday for practice, and could I get some directions coming from the west on I-90. Looking forward to this match, a big thanks to Craig Nagel and the guys for making this happen. Roy was a great Guy and a tuff competior. If you could hang with Roy's scores at a match you new you had shot well.

While I don't have any authority, I will say that yes though we will probably still have some things to finish up, You will be able to get in some range time on Friday.

As to directions, take Highway 53 north from I90, this will be the third Wis. exit coming from the west, and continue past the Holmen exits. A couple of miles north of Holmen the road changes from four lanes to two. Continue acouple of more miles and turn left to take County road T to the East for about a mile and then the entrance to the club will be on the right. Just before you get to "T" you will pass a golf course on the right and the a campground is on the left almost at the intersection.

Hope this helps until someone gives a better response.

Also if you use the hot link in Al's post to go to the clubs website you will find maps of the area and club grounds.
