rimfire range picture please.

at our local game club board meeting tonight they voted to start biulding a rimfire/shotgun(for patterning turkey guns) range. what we need is pictures of other clubs ranges so that we can biuld the best looking and functional range we can. after we get the range biult we are going to have a match each month, and i'm hoping to see a youth shoot as well to get the kids and parents into the shooting sports more.

please guys help me out with this. we are trying to biuld something great for our club here in kentucky.

we already have a centerfire and pistol range that are really great. we are trying to add another addition to the club to hopefully expand the membership more and to bring new sheep into the flock.

big g we are biulding this one in danville at the boyle county fish and game club!!!! have you got pictures of just the bare range and shooting benches? we have the forms for the bench tops already. the president told me to get as many pictures and ideals as i can. will you travel up to our matches? we'll have a set schedule!!! when we get the range done i'll be contacting wilber about putting on sanctioned ir50/50 matches. i'll be buying the target stands,targets, scoring plugs,scales for wieghing rifles, and anything else we need to put the matches on with.

we are ganna try to biuld as nice a place as we can for this. we want to have something great for our members and to hopefully get the younger peope and thier parents into the shooting sports!!!!
 
thats right. i'm coming to a few shoots down there for sure now!! i got a replacement scope for the hall bolted on!!!! the weaver got to wondering around all over the place with no rhyme or reason!!! first shot high, second shot low, now where the hell did that 3rd shot go kinda thing ya know!!!

we are going to biuld the range first. you know get the horse first then put a cart behind it that the horse can pull!! we have desided on at least 8 benches for now. we may put more benches in but no less than 8!!

please guys we need some pictures to draw insperation from!!!

OK: Here are some pictures . . .

From the Chippewa County Shooting Association: Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

This first picture might seem a little cool to you Southern Boys, but it shows our range's best feature. We have a 24x24 heated building behind the 16 point firing line. There is a 12' x 24' foyer between the firing line and the building. The building is heated and we have four windows in the front we can shoot out of when that white stuff piles up.

Here is a shot from the right end of the firing line. It was noon hour and everyone was in the building having lunch.

That building is not our club house . . .

We call it a Squadding Room. We felt it important to have a heated building attached to the firing line. Shooting on a range in cold weather in Northern Michigan with a heated club house 100 yards away is not the best laid plan.

We have a large club house on the Trap/Skeet Range, a small club house behind the rifle range. Both have restroom facilities. We also have a large storage building to the left of the covered rifle range. In front of that building we have a 50 foot pistol range. To the left of the covered firing line is another 100 yard and a 200 yard range which are not covered yet.

I'll say it again: "The best feature of our rifle range is that attached heated "Squadding Room".

there was mention of a biulding by the president of our range!! one we could heat in the winter. for time being i'll just be damned glad to have a rimfire range for us to enjoy and have fun matches at.

I run benchrest matches one Sat or Sunday a month. Had to make the 500 lb benches movable. 5 inch wheels on the front legs up 1/8 off the pad. Trailer jack with wheel on rear leg. Crank it up 1 inch and the front wheels are on the cement pad. Easy to move out of the way for different events.

Just noticed picture is of Airgun Benchrest but run Rimfire Benchrest matches as well. Less time with clean up after Airgun matches NO shells to sweep up.

Some Range Thoughts.
If at all possible have the range face due North.
When laying out your benches think about putting enough room between them so that a left handed shooter can use a bench next to a right handed shooter.
Consider pouring your concrete pad an extra 10 or 20 feet & raise it at least 6 inches above the surrounding terrain.
Extend the two ends of your roof far enough beyond the first and last bench so the morning or afternoon sun does not make them unusable.
Try to have your main roof at least 10 or 12 feet high to reduce the noise when shooting.
These are just a few ideas to think about initially.

To add to Doug's reply, 6' center to center allows enough room for the lefty to shoot next to a "regular" shooter. Five feet c/c will work but, is real tight when you have a big guy on one of the benches.

If the roof is pitched to the parking area side, be sure to put up gutters, we'll shoot in the rain but hate getting equipment (and self) drenched between trunk and bench. :eek:

Consider a PA system for match director's use.

Leave 6 feet plus between parking area and concrete pad.

Allow for six feet of concrete pad behind benches.

If you do not need to move benches, filled 8 inch block w/ rebar ties into concrete plate will ensure SOLID benches.

Steel pipe set flush into the ground allows you to remove your WOODEN 22BR frames (prevents the inevitable misuse). Try to leave NOTHING above ground as it WILL be shot at !

1/2 inch Celotex is a good backer material, cheap, easy to replace but not water proof. Design the frames so backers can be slid in from top.

Put up a wailing wall to display fired targets.

Try to avoid scalping ALL the topsoil from in front of the range, subsoil makes it hard to set pole type windflags. Plant grass. If you put up berms to separate, plant vetch, a fast growing ground cover to prevent erosion of the berm(s). Berms WILL affect trajectories.

Face it north or northwesterly.

the only direction we have to face our range will be south-east:(!!! i was contacted by a guy in a wheel chair and i told him that we are going to biuld it so that anybody can use it. deadwood is right. anything left above ground does get shot!! we used to have small dingers at 200 yards. people shot the dingers off the rod that held them to show how accurate thier rifles were!!! you tend to have to make thing for the membership moron proof or a moron will destroy all you work for!!! awhile back we had some fool who would stand there and just shoot out into the woods on the side of the range with a semi-auto ak-47!! we asked him why he was doing that when he had a range right in front of him? he replied " i just like to shoot into the woods"!!!! moron i do believe!!! he's no longer a member at our club!!!!

they are going to put up a burm at the back and make sides on the left and right out of dirt. we will have trees behind the berms so it will nock the sun out of our faces.

the ideals are great so far guys. please keep them coming, and pictures as well if you can. i'll be taking copies of them to show to our club president.
 
Which way to facs the range?

North let's the sun shine on the targets all day. Northeast may be better compromise in the Summer, when the sun sets in the northwest. Northwest may be best, if you don't have evening matches.

South East? Well: When you can't find range property that fits your ideal, ya got'a improvise.

Our range faces West: Our rimfire evening matches are on Tuesday's. When the sun is shining in our eyes, and trying to burn out the crosshairs in our scopes, we do this . . .

Dick Wright's home range is in Harrison, Michigan. That range faces to the east. When they start a match in the morning, they stretch cloth in front of the benches between the upright supports.

As for the guys who need a wheelchair to get around: Make sure there is "knee" room under the top, and don't have a "block wall" down the center-line of the benches like George Kelbly has at his range in Ohio: (The "SuperShoot" man.) Not enough room for the footpedals of a wheellchair under the bench. The Harrison range is like that too. I have to swing the foot pedals out to get close to the bench. 28 inches under the top should be enough room: Works for me.

I'm glad to hear that somebody besides myself enjoys I/R 50. Seems that every range went ARA around here. Don't get me wrong, I just prefer I/R over ARA.

I'll dust off my 10.5 pounder and sporter and come down.

You can pull the Blue Grass Sportsmans League web site at www.bglsinc.com and hit "facilities" for range photos.

We had the same problem (around midday because our benches didn't face the same direction as yours) and same solution on our 50 yd range until we installed an overhang to the front of the roof to block the sun. There was a large baffle just in front of the benches that made it easy to attach one end of the overhang to.

How not to build a bench

These are sadly the benches we have,it truely is the worst case senario.Everything is connected (3 shooting points) so every movement of fellow shooters results in a wobble.It is much like shooting of a gello pudding.But that makes a 250 the more satisfying!
