Report on my "new" 40X and ammo weighing

I have a 40X I purchased at a Gun Shop in Midland. Us property. 4 digit serial number, standard barrel. It had been glassed bedded very tightly, and took some effort to get the action out, with an inch of barrel bedded. Using Eley red box, I was getting good groups, but always a flyer. Sometimes from the X ring to the 8 ring. I tried Wolf Match Extra, with larger groups and still flyers. I used my RCBS electronic scale and weighed all the Wolf. It ranged from 51.0 to 51.9 grains, with most of the ammo either heavier, or on the lighter end. The Eley was so consistent, it was scary. 30 rounds weighed, only one was off by .1 grain. I took out the bedding touching the barrel, and relieved around the recoil lug. Now the fliers are me, not the rifle. I had a 5 shot group that was around .1" or less.
I slugged the barrel, as Mr. Calfee explained in a PS article, and found I have a tight area at the chamber, but the rest of the bore is tight and constistant.
Now for a tuner and good trigger.
I am not sure what to do about the tight spot, or if I should do anything.

One of our area shooters, Mitch Johnson, has been having really good luck with his method of taking car of the tight chamber problem. He turns the barrel around so the tight end is at the muzzle. This gives you a reverse taper barrel that's choked at the muzzle. He can fill you in on all the details, but the ones he's done so far have been great shooters.

bbl.

1st let me say that im NOT in the same class as most of the other shooters here. Now What does the gun average say for 10 -5 shot groups, this is a much better gauge than the best group , as I stated in another thread my ruger 10/22 beat my tunered anschutz & my best 40x one session for best overall group.I suppose you have cleaned the bbl. real good as from what ive read there is a tendecy to have a carbon ring build up in front of the chamber, BESIDES who the heck would want to shoot a rifle with the bbl. turned around backwards, I get laughed at enough without showing up with sumthin like that:eek:

I wish I could shoot groups like that all the time, but I know better. I think I see a carbon ring, but I can't tell if it is a ring or erosion. I have scrubbed a little, but didn't want to get too aggressive. Even though I may never shoot in big matches, I strive to get the best out of my equipment. Lots of fun that way.
