Remington Model 721 Extractor

All,

A friend of mine has an old 721 that the extractor has given up on it. I have looked on the web but, can't seem to find one for it. Is there any place you guys know of that I can find one? Can one of the 700 style riveted or rivet less be modified to work? Has anyone tried that?

Thanks in advance,
Med.

I have some origional m721-722 extractors. You didn't say which size you need but I will sell you one for $50.00. Bill

The M721-722 are different than M700 extractors and are not interchangeable. M721-722 extractors do not use a rivit.

722&721 extractors are also quite a bit different than the rivitless 700 style. In a worse case scenario you can always resort to a sako extractor providing you can find someone to do the job right! As is well known on this forum, this will compromise the main safety feature of these actions so be carefull what you stick in the chamber as SHOULD be the case regardless.

I had a 721 in 300 H&H and the extractor gave out the day before I was to leave elk hunting. I called Remington and every place to try to find one, to no avail. I bought a 7mm Remington Mag and went on the trip. For the next three years it was to one gunsmith and then to another. Finally I got the call from the last gunsmith that he had found two and had installed one. I went and picked the rifle up. When I picked the rifle up the Smith said " I hope I did the right thing, I bought both of them at a highway robbery price $20 bucks a piece. I assured him that was the right thing to do. With a couple months that bloomin extractor would only work part time. I thought I could put the other one in and maybe it would last about as long. I went in and got the bolt from the Model 700-7mm mag and took the extractor out of each bolt. I took the 721 bolt over to the drill press and drilled a hole just like was in the 700 bolt and put the 700 extractor in the 721 bolt. That was in 1978 and I sold that rifle about 4 year ago and that extractor was still in it and working fine. Sorry about the long story. Kenny

Purchase a .532" face 700 L/A bolt.
Compare mean dimensions of both bolt faces/noses/lugs.
Modify stocks bolt handle cut for clearance.
Insert f-pin assy.
Fire Away.

Why would you think of some complicated fix for changing an extractor. Kenny

Solving the problematic 721/722 extractor issue?

Besides,been there,swapped bolts & haven't looked back.

Dan,
Did you read, how to put the 700 extractor in the 721 bolt? Kenny

I found one thru Greg Tannel last year...you mignt give him a call and see if he might have one more..!

My suggestion is to have a sako type extractor installed. It requires milling of the bolt In a fixture but is a sure fix and a much needed improvement!! Most gunsmiths install for bout 135. Including the new extractor

A lot of folks are not using the Sako anymore as it can be very dangerous.
sicero, I think Dan's fix could be a permanent fix rather that continually looking for factory extractors that seem to break often.

Sorry guys,

I've been out of town for a couple of days. The gun has a standard bolt face for a .270 Win. Bill, I will talk to my buddy and see if he's willing to go that much (tight a$$ you know). I have the ability to do a sako conversion, but choose not to go that route since my friend is fairly new to reloading. Dan can you elaborate? Thanks for the replies.

Yes Sir, I read your post/procedure.
I took it one step further on a personal 722 bolt once to build up/machine/fit a 700 extractor also.

The process was simpler to remove a bolt from a 700 action,box/ship to Illion for $125(several decade ago).
A couple weeks later,remove said bolt,compare,insert bolt into action-shoot.
Several personal 700/40X actions have switch bolt/Bbls to this day by the same procedure.
There are even simpler options today-Thanks to D.Kiff/PT&G

My experience with the 700 extractor lasted more than 25 years and still working as far as I know. No exact count but 1000 to 1500 rounds. Kenny

Installing only the Sako extractor compromises the strength and safety of the 700. If you have a catastrophic case failure it will be dangerous. Why only install part of the Sako extractor system... 2 locking lug Sako's do not just have an extractor, they also have a large 'bolt guide' which is used for safety if you have a case blow badly. It helps deflect shrapnel from your head.

I would not own or shoot a 700 with a Sako extractor.

Here is a picture of a 2 lug Sako that blew up. Notice how the 'bolt guide/deflector did it's job. The shooter's head/face/eyes were unharmed.

When I was looking for one for my 722 I went on the Remington site and found a list of suppliers of obsolete parts. I started at the top and after calling 5 or 6 shops, low and behold, I found a fellow who had them. They do not come cheap. If I remember correctly I paid about $20 or $25 but for me it was a better approach than any conversion. The original lasted about 50 years in theory (well a really long time anyway) so hopefully this one will last as long as the original.

Good luck, Peter.

Yes and you compromise the recessed bolt head's "ring of steel". Also when you mill for the Sako extractor you open up a nice raceway for high pressure gas from a ruptured case to flow back and drive the extractor into you eye or forehead. Not a safe option imho. --Greg
