rem700bdl in .222

good day all:
i just purchased a 700 bdl in .222rem.
i also have a m788 in .222.
i was wondering if my 700bdl might have the varmint barrel.
the barrel on my 788 is smaller than the .660dia of my m700.(at the muzzle)
doe anyone know if the .660 dia of my 700 makes it the varmint barrel.

Rem 222

chucker; My Remington 700 BDL, ( serial# B6294xxx), 222 Rem. also has a .660" muzzle diameter. Might be the heaviest of the sporter contours. One of my most accurate factory rifles, and the bore, as seen with my "Hawkeye" is anything but nice. Typical factory with a lot of reamer marks, but it doesn't matter, and the dirtier it gets, the better it shoots.
 
finally got to shoot it

good day all:
well,i finally got to shoot the .222 today.the winds have finally died down.
i,m lucky as i have a 100yd range at my home so i just have to wait for co-operative weather so i can get some load work done for my 700.so i set up at 50yd to get the scope all tidyed up.
i loaded up the following:
win brass & primer,19.8 gr h4198 ,sierra varminter 40gr hp,oal 2.130"
3 shots .261 " pretty good.
win brass & primer,20.1 gr-h4198,sierra 40gr varminter hp,oal 2.130"
3 shots .217" freaken awesome!!
next fed brass & primer,h4198 19.6gr,50 gr v-max,oal 2.212"
3 shots .592" needs more work.
next factory federal premium v-shock,nosler 40 gr ballistic tip, oal 2.125 p/n
p222c.
3 shots .416" what can i say
it seems to prefer the 40 grainer,so far
so,should i keep going up in powder charge with the 40 grainers and see what happens or,start working on the 50 grainers and try to get the groups down more.
i have imr4895 and imr3031 yet to try.
all shot were made off sand bag rest.

what do you all think.
any input would be greatly appreciated.

222 Rem.

The Remington 700 BDL, described above does an excellent job with: 20.5 grs. H4198, 50 gr. V-Max, Rem 7 1/2 or 205 primers, seated .020" off the lands. Another excellent load is 22.2 grs. H322, same bullet, seating depth & primers. These same loads are also excellent in my Sako L-46, Hart 1-14 barrel. Surprisingly, the 50 gr. V-Max has outshot many match grade bullets in side-by-side comparisons. Lapua brass, of course.

I have some of the rifles that have been talked about. Here is a small sampling of my collection.

Leadchucker the first group are factory and factory modified. The second group are Varmint. The third group are short range BR. I didn't show my Rail Gun barrels they are all 1.35 inch muzzle. My Rem 722 barrel is not full length. To remove the welded front sight 1 1/2" was cut off, the gun is a semi-custom.

If this helps you fine. A guy with different groups of rifles likely will vary in their muzzle measurement list.

Welcome to the 222 club.

These are fun rifles.

I suggest you may want to try the 30 gr Berger match bullets. I shoot these up to 4000 fps out of my 26" barrel using H 4198 or IMR 4198.

As they are so speedy they do very good in switch and changing wind conditions. Recoil with the light bullet is very low.

At 3925 I usually can shoot down to and under 1/4" most of the time.

I am using a Montana #6 contour SST barrel with a tight neck chamber. Barrel is on an XP-100 action in a BR stock with 3" forearm. Lots more fun to shoot than my PPC in the Panda.

At 80 to 125 yards the bullet makes a puff on smaller critters.

good day all:
well,did some more load work yesterday,it didnt go well.
i think i was having an off day or it was the heat and humidity(34degrees C and so humid that i broke a sweat opening a beer).
i tried 4 different loads @50yds and couldnt get a group tighter than .75"

better next time

Speaking on the 222, I bought a nice little tripple deuce from our friends at Tikka / Sako / Beretta, great gun, shoots unde MOA with any ammo.

When I first thought about getting a 222 ,the only caliber I had never owned to find there are only a selected bunch of makers that still chamber the 222 legend.

A polishing blunder with armour all on the Tikka stock removed "completely" the lousy varnish job and left a real nice natural timber finish that you probably would pay for on a Sako, I guess some things were meant to happen.
 
I have a Shilen .222 benchrest barrel for my HV. The barrel was in a LV gun but I made that Rem 600 action into a HV gun. The chamber neck is a .248 make .246 seated bullet rounds. Shoots well but all my BR barrels shoot well, some shoot exceptional.

around 20.5 of imr 4198 and a 50 bal tip ( start@19.5) or 21.5 and a 40 grain baltip or v-max
