Just may have found my donor action for a 338-06.

Serial # 186567
Barrel coding DXM 13

My guess Sept of 1973...

Is that what you fellas figure????

Well Fellas, I picked this baby up first thing this morning. The shape it is in I could not pass it up. Currently is in 270 but will be a 338-06 by next hunting season.

Well I went to OLDGUNS.NET and according to there dater it is Sept or Dec 1965. Heck if that is the case I was growing inside mothers tummy........

Most definately makes me feel glad that I grabbed this baby......

I think Rem. quit the pressed checkering sometime in 1973. I remember getting a pressed checkering stock for the price of the new cut checkering. Another bare foot pilgrim took it in the ???
 
Need a better pic of the left side of the barrel for a proper date coding...

On the barrel is a inspector's stamp (funny looking symbol), then a two character date code (i.e., RQ which would egual 11/78) and then a assembler's code (i.e., 12)

The first char in the date code is the month

B L A C K P O W D E R X
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12

THE 2ND IS THE YEAR CODE

If your date code is DX then it is Sept 1973
1965 date code is a M

XM is Dec 1965 and this also matches your serial number 18xxxx

Keith, is there any reference just by serial number? So many actions no longer have the original barrel...
 
So the last week or so I have been kicking around ideas of what I would like to rebarrel this old boy to???????????? Initially I was thinking 338-06 but in reality I have no real need for them big bullets. Currently it is a .270. It shoots okay but a Benchrester is never happy with okay.

My thoughts leaned back to a 30-06 as I have tons of bullets as I used to shoot one until I got into this game. Then I got to thinking what about a .280 Ackley improved, or even something with a bit more smack down power in the 30 Gibbs.

Looking for some ideas fellas???? The only plans would be to true him up, work the bolt and replace the firing pin spring, refinish the stock and steel butt plate. The factory trigger is pretty clean as is.

Any thoughts????
 
On a side note I found a Rem 700 from August 62 in 30-06. Now to try and convince the man to sell it to me. It is in similar shape to my .270.
