Rebarrel...

This question is for our experiened shooters especially here in the southeast. I need a new barrel for my 6PPC. Should I choose a 1/14" twist or change to a 1/13.5" twist? I'll be using Bart's Ultra's 68gr bullets.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you. gpoldblue

Barrel

I have been shooting 13.5 twist barrels (Kriegers), for a number of years, with reasonable success.

But, I will confess, the only reason I continue to shoot them is I am scared to try a 1-14 again. Personally, I doubt you could tell the difference.

In fact, the reason I started shooting 1-13.5 barrels is because Lester Bruno had some made up, and just about ruled everything that year, especially in Unlimited. I could nor resist. Neither could a lot of other shooters.

When I talked to lester, he had noticed something that a lot of us had. Often, single bullet holes in our targets wouls not appear to be round, almost as if the bullets were not quite as stable as they should be. The 13.5, it seems, cured this.

But, that could have been just a hot lot of barrels Lester had, and he knows how to make the best of a great barrel...........jackie

If I had to wait to get a 13.5 barrel, I'd take a 14 in a minute. In fact, I have.

But I remember sitting around Dave Tooley's shop one day, when he mused that at 100 yards at least, the old 62-grain Fowler's shot awfully good in a 14-twist. And of course, they're on a .760 jacket. R.G. Robinett makes some 65-67 grain bullets on a .790 jacket that should be perfect in a 14-twist as well. For the typical 65-68 grain bullets on the .8-whatever jacket, just maybe a 13.5 is better. Still, a lot of wood's been won with 14-twist.

Maybe ask Bart, since you'll be using his bullets?

I am a nobody here, but based on Lester's advice I just purchased a 1:13.5 Krieger from him to shoot his 68gr OO BT.

In casual observance based on my limited shooting, my current will 1:14 shoot 62 grain Bergers much tighter than the 68 gr OO bt.

The 62 gr Bergers will group under .2" where the the 68 gr shoot in the .2-.3" range. This is over flags and watching conditions carefully. My smallest groups came with a big load of 133 and the lighter bullets.

My notes are taken from approximately 500 rounds, so it is a truly limited, also the barrel has about 1000 rounds down it now.

I went with the 13.5 because I have over 1000 68gr OO bullets on hand.

After re-reading Jackie's post, I have noticed that the bullet holes always seem canted with more of the base of the bullet printing low and to the left of the hole (egg shaped and oval instead of a round hole). The 62 grain bullets punch a much cleaner round hole.

So, I am hoping the 13.5 twist will rectify this, in a few weeks I will have things up and running on the new barrel and time will tell me if the barrel choice was correct.

I have shot Bart's 22 bullets but not the 6mm.

Thanks for your time!
