Pulling the barrel on a Sake L46

Short story is it won't come loose. A Dead Blow Hammer on a 3 foot bar doesn't do anything. I figure it may have been together for almost 60 years so for now I will Soak it and keep trying. Any suggestions? David

These are dainty little actions so be carefull with your dead blow hammer an 3' bar. If the barrel is expendable I would put it in a lathe and take a parting cut in the barrel where it meets the receiver. The depth of the receiver wall is sufficient.
 
I have a real nice L46 action sitting on the shelf...hair line crack on face of action running under dovetail some smith had manadged to crack I assume putting the custom barrel on or taking old one off
 
Thanks for the advice. I have it locked in the vice with the Action Wrench leaning to the left with a weight on it. I will gently tap it and use Ed's Red on it every time I pass by. Want to save the barrel otherwise I would relieve the shoulder. No hurry on my part. David
 
an opinion re "action wrenches"


A while back I was tasked with removing the bbl on a Tikka..... similar situation, odd-shaped receiver, no fitted wrench to be had. I googled it and saw some truly red-nekkid and uninformed receiver destruction going on.

The recurring thread out in the web (and on this and other forums) was that Tikkas are wikkid tight and wikkid hah'd to remove.

I tried several "universal action wrenches" which instead of being fitted, as in matched to a round receiver surface, have tapers and vee-grooves to keep them from spinning on the receiver. The action wouldn't come off. Looking at it my feeling was (is) that the ill-fitting wrenches warped/caved-in/chinese finger-ringed/bound up/pinched the receiver ring into the threads.

I/we made a wrench, a fitted wrench and the problem went away.

If you have a loose fitting or homemade action wrench, it can be made to fit with Steel Bed or JB Weld. Just cat the action real well with release agent and make the custom jaws. Usually easier to do one half at a time.
 
The one plus with the Sako is that it has that nice squared integral lug that can be used to mitigate against crushing the action ring as Al says if the wrench is well fitted.
 
Good news as the barrel came off last night. I use a Heat Gun to warm the receiver to where spit will sizzle, spray penetrating oil and set up a vibration with a hammer. Took a week of doing that. There is a burr on the shoulder of the barrel from where it was torqued. Barrel still has the Twist, Chamber, and XX on the end. So I think it was bought pre chambered and threaded and put on as is. Making a chamber cast this morning and then the fun begins. Yes it is a Sake L46 Single Shot Action. David
