I happen to have a Savage long action in a 300 win mag, might go with a 6.5 x 284 for long range varmint here in PA (groundhogs) are there any pros & cons of using a long action for the 6.5x284

Wow, you sure are gonna make sure they're dead. How far out are you planning to shoot?

Well I have a rifle for up to 500yds, want to get the job done from 500 to 1000 plus. my buddy uses a 30-338 but I am thinking the 6.5x284 will give it a run. he connected a few times while I was with him in the 1200yd range, I felt under powered with my 300 win mag, but I am still trying to get a bullet and load to work with the 300 win mag till I get my 6.5x284 done. any suggestions

Chet, probably more pros than cons. The nice thing is being able to set the long vld bullets so they don't gobble up powder capacity and they will feed out of the long action mag box. Same goes for the 7wsm.

I built my 6.5 x 284 on a 700 LA, just to be able to use the magazine and not be stuck with a single shot because the loaded rounds where too long,,,,,,,,,,,,

The standard length action is hands down the better way to go. For all the reasons given above. I just don't see the so called short action for this ctg (6.5-.284). It presents all the problems with the short action, you will never see with the standard length action.

With VLDs, a loaded round will be difficult to extract from a short action. Go with the long and don't look back.

Nothing wrong with using a long action, you'll just have to change the bolt head. But the long Savage is considerably longer than the long 700 action. The Savage short action is still 2/3 inch longer than a short Rem 700 action and would probably work fine.

Weight

The only disadvantage I know of it weight. I have to two LA Savage actions. I went with a LA initially for my 6mm Rem and 6 AI shooting the 107s. I shoot a 223, 6BR, 30BR from these with absolutely no problems. I use a follower and don't worry about making the mags fit the shorter BR cases or 223. Probably a little better stock selection for the SA Savage if I had to guess. But, plenty of good LA options for you.

Luck in your build, tiny

Beyond 500yds anything smaller than 6.5 makes spotting impacts almost impossible. 6.5-.284 is marginal for long-range varminting IMO.
