Digging through some old loading equipment, looking for something else entirely, I found two C.S Pool loading tools buried among the many items from long ago. They came into my possession years ago from a friend who used them in the mid to late '50's when he began benchrest shooting. Don't know if there are any collectors out there, but I have this recurring nightmare that my kids will sell them, along with everything I own in a one-price-buys-it-all garage sale. Before that day comes, I'd like to know a little more about the tools and how prevalent their use was in this early period of benchrest shooting as the technology was advancing and evolving. They are both in .222 Remington calibers and one has extra tooling for .222 Magnum. They are marked C.S. Pool number 78 and number 134. Anyone with some history feel free to jump in here.

Mackey here is the gentleman to contact regarding information on your POOL tools gcleave@ymail.com. Jerry is Will ( Charles ) Pools nephew and he has all of the build records so also include the numbers on your tools. The story of the Pool Tool is quite an amazing story and at one point Remington was involved in a deal with Will to start manufacturing them. Ask Jerry he can send you the article, it would make a nice addition to your Pool collection. Jerry is also making the tools on Wills behalf but the line is long as it is a very desirable tool as a re&de capper for the Schuetzen community and the quality is second to none. Jerry is a Schuetzen shooter and he also runs the Central Sierra Schuetzen club just outside of the Fresno Ca. area. Be patient for the response as he does not have an internet connection but generally makes a trip the library once a week or so to get on line to check his e-mails. By chance do your tools also include the sizing dies?

Congratulations on your owning a unique piece of history as well as a very fine tool.

Thanks for the tip John. I've contacted Jerry Cleave and he has been a great help. He is sending me lots of information including the previous article from Precision Shooting and the name of the original owner, who is the person I got the tools from. As time goes by, these old tools and other items from the early days of benchrest become more interesting to me. Maybe it's because I'm also getting to be an old timer myself.

I'm going to try to upload an image. If it works, you'll see two separate tools. The tools are a complete decapping, priming, sizing tool in one, and very precision made. Many old benchresters used them in serious benchrest competition, so they worked and worked well. Most, I believe, were made for the 222 Remington, since it was a small diameter case and also happened to be the king of the hill cartridge at the time. The tools pictured show one that is for a 222 Remington and the other which is a 222 Remington Magnum. Jerry Cleave copied a Precision Shooting article that he wrote and is sending it to me since I am missing that particular issue. I believe it came from the March, 1998 issue. I've never used these tools and don't know exactly how they work but Jerry assures me that the article will explain all that. Mr. C.S. Pool made the tools, and they were very popular at the time. He also kept detailed records of the person that he sent them to. I've had these tools for several years. They were given to me by a close friend of the person for whom they were made, according to Jerry, who consulted Mr. Pool's old records. This is just one example of the many talented and innovative people that have been, and are still, a part of this precision shooting game.

Jerry has made a few for us Schuetzen shooters for re&de capping and the quality is absolutely magnificent as I am sure his uncles were and they are real treasures to own.
