Piller Bedding torque values

Does anuone have an opinion on what torque settings should be used to torque a Rem 700 style rifle stock aafter piller bedding? Does stock composition make a difference? Fiberglass/laminated/wood? Do piller beds make a difference? Holland or Brownells or custom Aluminium?

I have an opinion, a properly pillar bedded rifle doesn't have any need for a "torque spec" because it simply makes no difference. I tighten mine enough that they don't come apart which means short hannle of the allen wrench.

With grease on the threads.

If torque settings change poi more than 1/4moa or if "torque" affects "accuracy," you've got bedding problems.

I make my own pillars and I'm not getting into whether it's necessary or not, but I torque mine to 70 inch pounds on the front screw and 50 inch pounds on the rear.

If expertly bedded with pillars 35 - 45 inch pounds on both screws should be good.

I would try 35 inch pounds on a wood stock and 45 inch pounds on a composite stock.

x2

I once had Custom actioned rifle that had an issue with it's trigger guard not staying level ; would hang down from the stock when the rear screw was torqued down. I looked it over and could see an indentation where the rear pillar should have been. I found a washer that made up that difference and torqued it down again; same result.

This lead me to believe that either the rear pillar was short for some reason or wasn't really there. I never found out but it use to bug me.

The rifle shot exceptionally well and a little better than a sister to it that had bof pilars extended. This is why I said X2. Apparently the bedding in that rifle is as near to perfect as one can get.

I have used everythig from 35fp to 60 fp and haven't seen any difference in the way they shot. Folks say it is a different story with RF rifles but I haven't experimented with them.

I'm with Al on this except that I locktite my threads, which it seems like Benchrest.com does too, since the color of the thread is the same as the blue locktite and.........nevermind

Ohhhh HEEpers.....everyone's a comic!!!

:p

Anyways, yes I grease everything including scope screws. If I DO ever lock screws I use JB Weld after thoroughly degreasing with acetone, MEK or the like..

Gener'ly, as in purdy much everything else you'll find me doing it DIFFERENT!!

LOL
