Partial or full profile threads

I am interested in what you guys use for cutting threads and if anyone has seen a difference in rifle accuracy cutting with partial or full profile threading carbide inserts.

I Just changed to a partial profile carbide insert tool. I thought about the full profile but went ahead with the partial. I was using the cemented carbide tools and HSS. After using all three, I like the partial profile insert tool better, it seems to cut a cleaner thread from the crest of the thread to the bottom of the "V". Thats just my .02 worth.

I use full profile for internal threads, OD's are partial. It's just a cost thing the partial's are less money for the most part.

Full profile threads are stronger because there is always no crest interferance do to a unknown thread dia. The tool would not be offered if application was not needed. The problem with bad finish, tool is used in CNC with speeds that are hard to do on std machinery, wrong grade insert, wrong application angles and finish cut, wrong lub or solvent, chip control, shallow feed cuts tend to work harden the part being threaded causing chatter. Just keep in mind with full profile inserts each one will only cut the T.P.I that is listed on insert. Good luck!!

Do you have any pictures of thread chatter that you post? I would be interested in seeing what it looks like.

Also what grade of insert have you found works best on a manual lathe? Lube?
