Optics question

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and green at long range shooting. I recently bought a CZ 550 varmint in 308 and wanted to shoot 600 to 1000 yards. I got a Nikon Monarch 8x32x50ED scope which I found out only has 20 MOA adjustment. I got a 20 MOA rail but I want something better. The something better that I have settled on is a Nightforce in either 8x32x56 or 12x42x56. The thing that I am confused about is that most of the searches I have done on this and other boards is that most long range shooters prefer the most magnification but again you loose adjustment range.

If I got a 12x42 with the 40 MOA I would only have 20 up plus the 20 from the rail which would get me out to a 1000 but I would using the very top of the optics, not the sweet spot. Would it be better to get to go with something like a the 5.5x22 which has 100 MOA adjustment and sacrifice magnification for using the center of the optics?

I may be over thinking this but if I'm going to spend that kind of money I would like it to be useful for as many rifle upgrades in future as it can be.

Thanks!

First thing I'd say is before you spend any money, go to a match. You'll get far more information than from us on the internet. First of all, you'll be there for several hours. Secondly, you'll see what BENCHREST is about, and how it differs from what you expect.

The only caveat is that as with any bunch of people, either gathered at a match or posting on the internet, there will be a lot of opinions characterized as "true," myths, wives-tales, unsubstantiated claims, and downright wrong information.

It s still worth going, and will save you a bunch of money in the long run.

All around, including hunting.........5.5-22 or 8 - 32. Strictly a LR hunter and LR BR....Go big......12-42!!!! Aim small mis small. Ifg not being centered in the scope adjustment....swap the 20 moa rail for a 30 moa.

Just my .02
