Hi
Although not strictly a benchrest question ,I'd hope you guys could give me an idea of the possible performance of my 8mm Mauser @1000y
-Mauser with Douglas barrel- 1 in 10
-bullet Sierra 200 gr matchking -bc .520 above 2300 fps ,.0505 above
-muzzle velocity :2375fps (why so low? because best perf accuracy : half moa @ 100 yards )
-residual velocity @1000 y : 1030fps
path line : 16 meters !!
In perfect conditions ,no wind ,perfect shot... what would think would be the diameter of the dispersion cercle over say 10 shots
I would appreciate your opinion as I think this forum is the only place where i can find this sort of info
all comments welcome !
thanks
peter

I would guess the circle would be about 200 feet. That velocity is not going to get you to 1000 IMO with a 200gn Sierra. In all seriousness, I don't think you will be able to shoot that 200 at much less than 2550-2600 in really perfect conditions and get all the shots to arrive. Someone else more experience with a 308Win might chime in here and offer real experiences, but, that said, I think it's a stretch. Stay to shooting 600 yards with it and I think you'll be happier with the results.

many thnaks for this first response
I shoot Fclass in 308 and scred 60 out of 90 at the Imperial meeting in London in July
so ,308 is about ok for me
I 'll obviously never shoot competitively with this 8 mm caliber at that range. I am only trying to gauge what the dispersion circle would be

PS .:
I have been impresssed by the performance of some black powder shooters at that range ,
and ...their bullets ,although much heavier, are not really that supersonic !!

I think you'll find those black powder bullets are a different animal altogether. They make the transition to subsonic (if they ever were supersonic) without tumbling.

If you're familiar with the 308, have you ever shot the 200's in that? My guess is no, but, maybe you have. In 1000 yard shooting here, those shooting a 308 size case usually shoot a much smaller bullet. In my own experience with 175s adn 185s, they need quite a bit more velocity to make it to 1k than the heavier bullets do.

If you go search for an online ballistics calculator and look at your bullets performance. I think you'll be happiest if you can keep 1400fps at the target. I've always used 1450 as a rule for my own guns. Below that, yea, it might work one day, but I wouldn't want to count on it. Try a few different bullets with some known velocity you can achieve and see what bullet will work best in your situation. Also, a firm hold on the gun might be worth as much as 40fps vs a loose hold, so while it might hurt a bit, it may help get the bullets there. Sounds like you can use every fps you can get.

If you can get a bullet to make the trip, I'd expect a 15-25" group, and would be very happy if I could get one smaller. If you can break 10" with it, that would be very good. Again, imo.

you 're right ,1400/1450 is what I get with my 308
i only use now 155 's as they work better in my barrel than the 175 or worse-190
Maybe ,another way of looking at my question would be to look at the performance of any round -say- 3 or 400 yard past the transsonic range .Example :308 190 grain normal velocity at 1200/1300 yard ?
I suppose the group would not be too dissimilar to my 200 g low velocity 8mm Mauser at 1000yards?
i have no idea what the group would look like
