New to Benchrest, need info on Denton match

Well, I'll start by saying I've never shot a Benchrest match in my life. I have been an avid varmint hunter for a very long time,but I have allways had an interest in the sport of competitive shooting, getting up in years now and I think I might like to give it a try. What I do not want to do is spend a small fortune on equipment(until I decide I want to do this as a serious hobby). If I come to one of the club matches, I want to be as prepared as I can. I have read a lot on this site in the last 6 mo. or so and seems to be a good group of people, willing to help. So could some of the Denton shooters chime in and point me in the right direction?

Here is what I DO have:

I have several rifles that shoot very well. I would probably shoot my Tikka T3 varmint in .308win. that I have developed a load for that is quite accurate.
I have a Sinclair front rest with a windage top.and a Protektor rear bag that I bought at Cabela's.
I have a 36x B&L scope I got from somewhere years ago that I could mount on the Tikka. That's about it.
Would this suffice for my first experience?
Is there someone at the matches to direct newcomers to the sport?

Any input would be welcomed.

Check the North Shooters Asso web site and you can follow the dates for various matches . You can come out to any of these and join in the fun. We have a Regional match on Apr 4 & 5 that is NBRSA reg match. We expect 40 shooters from 5 states. Denton is a privately owned range and you can come as my guest any time.

Mark, that rig will do fine to get your feet wet. As for Bill's offer, it is an excellant offer, Bill is a great guy and a heck of a good shooter, you couldn't do better for a mentor. Steve
 
Mark,
You need to come out on a Saturday. That’s the day you will decide if you want to make this a “serious hobby”. You can learn more at one match than months of reading on this site, but it only takes one practice day with 8 -10 Benchrest shooters to know to want to come back. I would suggest you come out and ask all the questions you have and try some of our equipment. You’re in the same boat as many of our shooters when they started. It’s not uncommon for someone to use a good shooting factory rifle their first year as they get geared up. It doesn’t matter what you want to shoot, 30 cal., 6mm., group or score we do it all at Denton and mostly focus on having fun.

If you’re free tomorrow you are welcome to shoot as my guest. Several of us gather each Saturday and shoot from around 9:00 to 3:00. Just give me a call or drop me an email.

*April 4th & 5th NBRSA- Texas Showdown 4 Gun 200, 5 shot UNL.

*August 15th & 16th NBRSA- Hotter’N Hell Gulf Coast Region LV-SP, 100-200

*October 10th & 11th IBS- Denton IBS Texas State Championship Sat. 100-200 Score, Sun 100-200 HV Group

$ 40/day entry fee. Saturday match will start at 9am, Sunday 8am

May 10th 200 yd ---club
June 7th 100 yd ---club
July 13th 200 yd --club
Aug 9th 100 yd -- club
Sept 13th 200 yd -- club
Nov 8th -- club

Most any bolt action gun allowed. $25.00 entry fee. Bench Drawing at 9am, shoot at 10am.
There will be a prize for the yearly points champion (Shooter of the Year).
The Shooter of the year will earn the most points from 5 of the 7 club matches with the 2 lowest scoring matches thrown out. Points to be given as follows- 1 point for each shooter you beat plus 2 points for each match you attend.

Got too many other projects going. I went out there Thurs when the wind was a little better and zeroed in the 2 guns I'll shoot April 4 &5. Mar 28 I'll go to Ennis to a rimfire match. Get your 22 out and join us
 
Thanks for all the input, I think I will come out on a Sat. that there is not a match, and I may shoot in one of the club matches, and see what transpires from there.
