I didn't know there was a new RL25.......You tell me how to tell new from old, and I will tell you the difference in performance......actualy...no I won't. I have seen ZERO changes in my RL 25, and I have been shooting it almost exclusivly since it came out. I baught my last batch (25 LB) this past winter. Do I have the new or old stuff.

Thanks,
Tod

tod sir

i didnt either, but when i bought some the other day it says new on the bottle and at the bottom it says made in sweden for new river energetics and not alliant as on my other bottles,i saw a website with the new and old as separate items as well ,i was told by alliant today it is the same stuff but real old lots,i have never seen this before and i have shot a lot of reloader 25 in particular for years,i think it is midway that shows 2 different reloader 25s but i am not sure,i was trying to get reloaded last night and it was late ,so i surfed around at dealers and saw both reloader 25s for sale ,i just went and bought some more that didnt say new on the bottle to get by for now.i did pull up a search on a sniper forum about this ,one spoke that when the new was used his velocites were irratic, but these are just talk.i will compair the two when i get back from my prarie dog hunt. tim in tx

Sounds like the old stuff. As I remember, the old stuff was slower. I still have a bit in one of the bottles that Bill Shehane was pushing when it first came out. Now that *was* slow. They were one-pound bottles, with labeling as you say. About 1997 or maybe 1998.

Only way I know is to test the velocity & charge weight against what you were using.

Rl-25

Tim, I have an old 1lb bottle that is has mint green label that is the time frame Charles E. spoke about. Lot#96224 Mar.20,1998 also states made for New River Energetics. I have had 3 different lot#'s which are 55136( don't have a bottle left) for mfg. date. But I have at least 10lbs lot lot#65013 which is also New River Energetics mfg. date Oct. 4, 2006. I have had this powder for at least 2-2.5 years. They are both marked NEW.

I have not been shooting my 308 Baers in a long while. I have recently had a heavy gun rebarreled and will be shooting the Baer again, but only have 35 rounds through the new barrel, so I have no current info for you.

The lot#55136 I have run out of, but was shooting in 338-404 Jefferies. I have found 18 pounds of a new lot(new to me) which is lot#75118, mfg date Nov.30,2007. It is made in Sweden for Allaint. I have only shot 15 rounds with this powder all with 300 grn. Sierra's, and my lot#55135 with 87.5 grns.was at 2875fps, and lot 75118 was 100 fps slower with the same charge. This is all of the info I have at the moment.

April, and May are my busiest months, and I have not been to the range. I will go after the first of the month, and should be able to give you an update after. I will play with both lots 65013, and 75118,with the 308 Baer, and the 338, and give you the results at a latter date. I wish I had all the info you needed now, but real life gets in the way of fun. Regards, Waverly

It is unwise to load any of the Reloader powders without first testing the new lot. I have been shooting these powders for years and every lot I get is different from the last in burn rate. The Reloader powders work well but lot to lot consistency is not one of their attributes. In my experience it is common for the burn rates to vary 3-4%. I think they state that burn rates can vary up to 10% which is huge IMO.

I have found that (with Reloder15) the same situation. Powder made in Sweden for New River Energetics burns cleaner,(made in USA is very dirty) has 30 to 40fps more muzzle velocity than the powder "MADE WITH PRIDE IN THE USA". I would prefer the buy the made in USA powder, but it's not the same.

thanks guys for the replys

i dont normally get in to this situation as i buy enough powder to last through the barrels life ,but i did some testing this weekend while we were waiting for the dogs to come up,the bottle marked new lot #25057 was quite faster [about 5%]then my present lot.i bought 2 bottles of this and it apears to be made possibly in 02 it wasnt printed very well .i bought a third bottle not marked new made in 08 lot #75166 shift 2 is right on par with my present lot.the praire dogs just hated it. i was surprised at the difference of this evendently old lot.10% would be just scary.i know the rules when it comes to lots but i never heard of any problem lots with the 25 but i will still always adhear to the rules ,if i had not even loaded at 2 grains below max load it would have been disaster for sure.well thanks again guys and good luck to all of you this year. tim in tx

We've been through this scenario at least once before -- maybe the late '90s, maybe the early '00s. I don't know if the current situation is the same, but at that time, it was finally acknowledged as "a mistake."

What happened was I got a bottle of Rel-22 saying "Made in the USA." Now I found this passing strange, because as best I knew, all Rel-22 was made by Bofors. In fact, Norma MRP and Rel-22 were the same powder, all made by Bofors. The packaging from Norma and Alliant was different, and for all I know, "packaging" meant brought up to cannister specs (10% variation allowed), as opposed to bulk specks (20% variation allowed). But maybe not, for all I know, what came from Bofors was all "cannister" specification.

Anyway, I believe it was Jim Borden who tracked down the curious "Made in the USA" labeling. Alliant (which use to be Hercules) said they made a "labeling mistake," It was all made in Sweden.

If this occurrence of "Made in USA" is a newer jug, it may be the same old thing -- pure branding hype.

There are people who think MRP and MRP-2 are different than Rel-22 and Rel-25, and with all the branding efforts, little wonder. But the last time I checked, they were both just a packaging of the Bofors powder -- with, just maybe, a bit more quality control by Norma. I think the Reloader series is still good powder -- I still use it -- you just have to check each new lot.
