New bore scope?

A friend and I went halves on a bore scope. I am working toward getting his rifles ready for an elk trip, as a few weeks ago it quite shooting. Its a Sako 85 SS hunter in 300 win mag. I highly suspected it needed a good cleaning, and Berreta USA said to also check action screw torque. It came back alive after the bore snake was sent to the locker and real cleaning tools and chemicals were used. The bore scope arrived Friday and I looked at it and it looked clean except in the middle of the barrel and on the grooves that were on the top of the barrel. Is this because gravity is keeping my copper solution on the bottom of the bore and I need to turn the gun over? Thanks for your help! Mark

If, after a few cleanings with a good process and good solutions you still show copper you need to buy some Sweets 7.62 and use that. Beware that Sweets is a harsh treatment, use according to its directions and wear eye and skin (gloves) protection,

Oh, make sure the barrel is free of Sweets or any of the other chemicals before you stick your new bore scope in the barrel. That mirror is easily damaged and costs over $100 to replace!.,

Worry too much about removing every scrid of copper, just getting it clean enough so that it is giving acceptable hunting accuracy. Carbon ring in front of the chamber throat is something to look for and remove. For that you may need some IOSSO or other paste type bore cleaner. If heavily copper fouled you've already been given good chemical cleaning suggestions. Good luck.

Copper, I'd get it all out. You can with Sweets or long soakings of Butches, etc. Not long soakings of Sweets but several applications.

The trouble with getting part of it out is that it may stop shooting again during a hunt. If you are shooting short distances, say, under about 200 yards and shooting larger game some coppering might not be a problem.

I thought a lot about boresnakes for something to use in 17 cals. The problem is that the first time you run it down the bore it seems like it would be coated with grit. This can only get worse and worse. So instead of cleaning the bbl you are actually just applying a good coating of grit, chamber and all.

Aren't borescopes wonderful? :D

Not too sure how readily available Lyman's new borescope is. I've had one in order from Optics Planet for quite awhile. Certainly worth a try as inexpensive as it is.

Finally got the chance to look down a couple of my rifles. I couldn't believe what I say they were clean, the 300 RUM that I expected to be firecracked half way to the muzzle had rounded edges on the throat but no other damage. A 308 win hunting gun that I've only shot a few times was in great shape. The barrels (factory guns) looked pretty good. The only thing I've learned is that I must be a real bad loader cause they ought to shoot better.

New Bore scope

while on the topic, Did anyone buy one of those new bore scopes that Lyman is making?
