I am sort of new to this so bare with me... I want to find a .300WSM action and barrel to put on a Knoxx system frame. Essentially making a Howa/Axiom Rifle, however they do not offer it in a .300WSM .I would prefer a 20" barrel. The Remington 40-XS caught my eye and would like to duplicate something along those lines. I am putting this weapon together for a dual hunting and moderate entry level competition firearm. Money is a factor so anyone that suggest $5000.00 actions need not reply. Other than that i am open to suggestions from people more experienced than I. By the way the HOWA/Axiom package has been a thought, however I am partial to the "wissum" and would like to find that caliber.
Thank you for your help.....

Mr. Roadhouse why would you prefer 20" barrel on .300WSM? That can lead to disappointment.

Con,
I was actually prefering that length purely b/c of weight and speed. (the speed of sighting in on an object ie. a deer from a stand. In GA. where I hunt I find that using a smaller light weight rifle to quickly aquire my target(in most cases deer) sometimes in an awkward position from my stand this smaller length would be helpful. Although I realize that a 24" barrel is not to much more to burden in either. It is merely a preference. what would you suggest? Do you have much experience with this type of round? Will the longer barrel REALLY make a huge difference? As I stated I do want to use this as an entry level weapon in comp. shoots. I'm guessing ranges of upwards of 600m. Will the smaller barrel do me an injustice?.....By the way you can call me Roadhouse w/o the Mr. it makes me feel old....haha
Thanks for the reply

300 wsm

Hi,
Not really answering your original question but I cut a 300 win mag to 20" for hunting and range work. My only regret is that I didnt do it sooner!!!! :)

I have built 2 300RSAUM rifles on model7 Remingtons. They are lightweight and love Barnes 180grn. TSX bullets. Recoil ain't bad. The WSM needs to have a long action to be able to take advantage of its extra length in case size. With a 20" barrel you will be over on case capacity. I don't believe that you can use[burn] all the powder. My rifles are 21.5" in barrel.

I had a 300 WSM on a remington 700 SA. 26" Shilen barrel. The gun shot well but never fed reliably. I tried the Wyatt mag box and looked at the H&S precision detachable mag. Got a chance to trade for a 300 Win. Mag and did it.

If your hunting deer from a tree stand, do you really need a 300 wsm ? sound like overkill, both for deer and for entry level paper punching at 600 yds. Consider something in a standard (non-magnum) variety. Lots of good 308's out there to choose from along with a host of other calibers. I would also honestly consider 2 guns, one for each disipline, IE a small light weight Rem Model 7 or something similar for your tree hunting, and something with at least a heavy factory varmit weight barrel on it for paper punching, or if you can swing it, possibly a used benchrest rifle or something similar.
