We kicked off the year with a bang. (no pun intended) Conditions where hit and miss, very windy at times. Yes believe it or not the wind does blow on the east coast. We had a return from a hard hitter Tony Rogers and he picked up right where he left off. Lots of new shooters came out and hope they had a good time and will return. The guys and Jenni put in a lot of work to make it all happen and did a great job. The target crew worked long and hard to keep us going and we are very greatful to have them. Big thanks to Mark Hunt for keeping us going smooth as possible. Check out the rest of the results on northcarolina1000.com coming soon.

It was quite a day. I only live 20 miles from the range, so I get to watch the local weather forecasts. Last Tuesday, they were forecasting 80 degrees and sunny. That kept changing, and by Friday the best of the local stations were saying "we don't know what will happen." Which turned out to be true: morning temperatures were about 50 degrees, and it was drizzling. Busy guys like Dave Tooley apparently didn't check the forecast throughout the week and showed up in shorts or without a coat.

Maybe because it was the first match after a winter layover, or maybe because of the weather, the intercom with the pits wasn't working. ("Anybody got a soldering iron" isn't something you commonly hear at a match.) Once that got solved (alligator clips), it turned out that about half the electrically-controlled target frames weren't working properly, so we had to reset the benches to use the frames that were working. By the time it was all solved, Scott Fletcher, David Hodges and Mark Hunt were breathing a bit rough.

There was a plus side: After solving the problems, the drizzle had stopped. It was cool, but pleasant shooting weather. One or two more small SNAFU's along the way.

So if you were one of the F-class guys shooting your first benchrest match with us, those early problems aren't typical. Nor were the largish groups occasioned by the wind. The wind was coming in from the north, and played havoc as it crossed all the berms used for shorter distances. Usually we have mirage, at least there is some hope of reading that.

Personally, I learned not to give up on a barrel until you've tried all the reasonable powders. After the barrel failed to enjoy VV N-560, Rel-22 and Rel-25, I followed Danny Brooks advice and tried 4831. It liked that. Thanks Danny.

Jacob and myself had a great time. Good to see everyone again. We did have a few problems but they were taken care of as usual. Hope to see larger crowd at the next match in two weeks.

Chris & Jenni,
Thanks for your work at the match. The first match is always hectic. But I had a good time and will see you on the 30th.
