My surgeon action

I have a surgeon action that i am using for an f-class rig. I really like the action as it seems very well put together. The way i understand it is that surgeon actions are a bit on the loose side. Surgeon wants there actions to work every time with every situation. I have a 22BR barrel on the action now and it is set in a Mcmillan f-class stock. With 75gr and 80gr bullets it shoots in the 2's and low 3's at 100yards pretty regularly. I only have 100 rounds down the tube at this point. Here is my delima. I have been thinking of selling the action and going with the new stiller p-1000. The P-1000 is supposed to be a great comp action. It will have tighter tolerances for sure. I really like my f-class stock as it is the best feeling stock i own. I want to have a great 1000 yard rifle and have been thinking i need a 6.5mm of some sort. I dont mean to talk in circles here, but will I get better groups if i go with a stiller action because of the tighter tolerances. Will my 22br barrel do better than high 2's low 3's if the action is tighter? I dont know weather to just keep the surgeon and buy a new 6.5mm barrel or sell the surgeon and go with a stiller P-1000 and a new 6.5mm barrel. I can sell the surgeon for about the same money as the new stiller so thats not a concern. I will either have to sell my 22br barrel or have it fit to the new action, so there will be some cost there. I will also have to have the stock re-beaded for a new action if i sell the surgeon and buy the stiller. Like i said i really like this stock and i want it to be the best it can be. Will my surgeon be ok for 600-1000 yards???? I hope this all makes some since. I will talk all this over with my smith, but i was looking for some opinions as well. Is anyone here shooting a surgeon with good results? I am tickled to death with my 22br barrel, and 2's are fine, but could it be better?? Thanks fellas!! lee

Check the Surgeon website. If you have a steel single shot it has tighter tolerances than stainless tactical models.

I use both Surgeon and Stiller actions. Either will shoot better than I can. Which Surgeon are you using?

It's not your shooting equipment that will determine whether you shoot well enough to win F-Class matches. It's you. And your ability to read the conditions and adjust accordingly.

If I remember correctly my Surgeon Tactical action has .0030 to .0035 bolt clearance and their benchrest models have .0020 to .0025 clearance. I couldn't find the specks on the Stiller recently and called and ask them and they were in the same range as the Surgeon.

My two cents is that you will not know the difference and if you can then I hope I never shoot against you! :D

What Tony said, but here it is from the sites. I did a "tactical" 700 for a buddy and looked up the tolerances the pros were using and remembered it was on theose particular sites. I made it with .001 clearance because that is what the guy wanted and in reality it just looks tactical. The paint had to be removed from the bolt to function but it was fluted and still looks kewl :D

Surgeon
Our repeater bolt has .007 clearance when the bolt is on its way to battery and a band the last
3/4-inch which reduces this clearance to .004 clearance (.002 per side) when the bolt is closed.
Our single shot bolt also has .007 clearance when the bolt is on its way to battery and .002 (.001 per side) clearance when the bolt is closed. There is a double band on the single shot bolts one behind the locking lugs and the other in front of the bolt handle.

Stiller all actions except Tactical and Hunting action
Bolt fit to body is .0015 to .0020.
Stiller, Tactical and Hunting
Bolt fit to body is typically .0040 to .0060.

Forget the specs.
Shoot the rifle or sell it but forget the idea of changing action and keeping barrel and stock, that's an absurd idea.
