Muzzle Break

Good Afternoon,

I have purchased a Savage 10 FCP-K in 223, and will pick it up Thursday. If it shoots as well as it is supposed to, I was thinking about giving the factory class competition a try a local range. I don't plan on winning anything, but competing against other factory guys should be fun.

My question is, are muzzle breaks allowed in bench rest competition. The Savage has one, so I thought I'd ask the question here first, instead of going to the range, and then not be allowed to shoot. I seem to recall reading somewhere that they were not allowed. Instead of doing a lot of research on my own, I thought I'd ask the question here.

Thanks in advance for any advice, Ken

They are not allowed in NBRSA and IBS competition, but they do not have a factory class. So if the club range that you go to allows it, go for it.

No Brakes allowed in short range BR 100, 200, 300, NBRSA or IBS. Many ranges have a factory class for new shooters, this allows the new shooter to shoot and learn how BR goes. The class is not sanctioned by the IBS or the NBRSA. The idea is to get the guys shooting and get them hooked on the sport, then hopefully they'll anti up and get a "real" benchrest gun. From our experience, sometimes it works, many times it doesn't. A few clubs we go to have the perpetual factory class crew, the "cooper club", eventually many drop out because you can only make a factory gun shoot so good. Some factory shooters spend tons of money and time finding that out and never get a BR rifle that would tune much easier and cheaper. Good used guns are around and can be had, the learning curve is much shorter with a good rifle.

Brakes

You need to contact the range where you are planning on shooting the Factory Class.

At Tomball, I allow Muzzle Brakes at my Club Matches, but I reserve three benches on the far right side for them, with two benches in between those and the last non brake competitor. That way, the blast does not disturb the other shooters.

As was said, in NBRSA or IBS Registered Competition, muzzle brakes are not allowed.........jackie

As everyone has said it depends on the range, but for the life of me I can't understand why a brake would be needed on a .223.
