Ms. Moly

Has anyone used Ms. Moly on their bullets? I know the method currently used is different. I am curious about the later.
Has the spray worked for you? If it does half of what it claims I would be happy. Hope to get a good thread on this.
Thank You Michael

I thought the Moly Craze had pretty much run it's course back on the mid 2000's. I think it was really created and pushed by a very prominant Bullet Maker so they could charge a dollar more per 100 bullets.

I went through it. I tried to convince myself it was worth something, but I finally came to the conclusion that the best thing to do to premium Benchrest Bullets was just shoot them.

jackie,
if you were thinking sierra, they said it was hocus pocus, but did them to supply customer demand.
european testing says it works...."shoot the same longer" with some increase in bbl life. test was 6.5x55.

Harold Vaughn looked into 5 supposed benefits of Moly in "Rifle Accuracy Facts" - he tested four of them and found no noticeable advantage with Moly. The fifth claim was increased barrel life and he allowed that that claim might pan out, but testing such would be too onerous.

I wasn't referring to Sierra. They don't make point blank Benchrest Bullets.
Jeff Fowler told me that if he caught shooters Molly coating his bullets, he would not sell them anymore. That might have been a over reaction. I never heard of any proof that a bullet could be damaged by coating, (the tumbling was the culprit), for me it just kind of turned into a solution in search of a problem.

If someone wants to coat bullets, go for it. The OP asked for opinions.

go do a search. lapua or norma did testing..significant testing.
only 2 benefits, as i mentioned.

I've used it a few hundred rds......still have several aerosols on the shelf. And some delrin racks for the spraying of. And some AL plates with holes in for the heating and spraying of, or visey varsey I cain't remember....

AFAIK I've used 'em all. If is sez moly or molybdenum or graphite or graphene or buckyballs or aliphatic hexabexamoronic nitrylide......I've bought into it. I've slabbered Lock-Eez down the bore, "treated" bores with Kroil and Ambergris tinctures then ironed them out with ATF (Skip Otto) or Ed's Red....... wiped 'em, slurried 'em, "fire-lapped" 'em, heated and treated and beated them with stuff that was touted to "soak into the pores of the steel".....it useta' take me 75-150rds to "break a barrel in," then "get it properly seasoned" and "work up a load!" Got to the point I had my own oven down in the shop cuz My Beauteous One didn't like the smells baked into the kitchen stove...made the bacon taste funny.

And I'm now an unbeliever. "Shoot nekkid, Shoot now" is me...

The last I bought were 1200 moly'd 88LD's from the company Jackie's referring to and I stripped the moly off. (They were the last of these bullets in the world and I wanted the bullets. But not the moly) Since then I've learned to just ignore it. I've probably still got 1000-1500 moly'd of various sorts and I will shoot them up when I feel like it, then clean the bore and switch back to nekkid........no harm, no foul as I've learned not to let it build up. And it don't soak into the steel IMO.

This was a HUGE topic back in the day. Unfortunately the archives have been wiped out twice and all the old "Moly Wars" stuff is gone. It was wikkid fun while it lasted but I'll side with Jackie, IMO he said it best.

There are folks that swear by coated bullets. I'm not one of them but their opinion is as good as mine. What matters, in the end, is how well you place at a shootin' match. Coated bullets have won a bunch but trying to convince me the coating is why they won would be like trying to convince me the earth is flat. Keeping in mind that the earth was once thought flat.

Did I try coated bullets? Yes, I did. Shot pretty good for a target or so.....

I've been shooting bullets coated with WS2 (titanium sulfide, I think( sometimes called DANZAC) for 12-13 years. I started with prairie dog ammo and now use it in all UBR matches. I would not use Moly due to it's reputation for building on itself and attracting moisture. I have never experienced a problem with WS2. As far as I can tell it doesn't enhance accuracy. But it does appear to reduce the need to clean so often. Once in a while I will clean between yardages, but usually I will shoot an entire agg (120-140 rounds) and clean the next morning. I tried it both ways (cleaning after every replay and not cleaning until after the match). I've seen no difference in accuracy. Matter of fact, I tend to shoot better @ 200 yards (2nd yardage) than 100, but that's probably just me. I use Patch Out with Accelerator for of my cleaning, the exception being that about once per season I will clean with Rem Clean. I have come to believe that my barrels may last a little longer, but wouldn't swear to it. I did try Boron Nitride for one season, but the bullets were difficult to pick up ( very slick) and I could detect no difference in accuracy. Most of the folks I compete with clean after every replay. I am probably the only one who doesn't. I win my share of matches. As Casey Stengle once said "you could look it up".

DITTO this . . . well, except that WS2 is tungsten disulfide . . . and, that since the craze began, way back when (?), I have stayed with the "moly" stuff, with similar experiences and beliefs. Although, it has caused me to win and to lose, so have other things. RG

Thanks Randy,
I always get that tungsten/titanium thing confused.
