i am (still) building a 1000 yd light gun in 300 win mag.
based on a left hand rem 700 long action.

what is "normal" for mounting ?

i had consider this a switch br/prone gun in two stocks but will listen to reasons for not doing that.

so mount a bedding plate in the stock ?

pillar bed

recoil lug /no lug.......

what ...how is yours done ??

thanks

Not a 'smith, but

I have bedded a number of Remingtons, Savages, FNs, and Rugers and I would pillar bed the action with aluminum pillars and use Devcon Steel Putty, 10110.

I would tape the bottom, sides, and front of the recoil lug and bed the action and the first 1.5" of the barrel including the recoil lug area. The tape on the recoil lug will allow for clearance when the need arises to take the barreled action out and the 1.5" barrel "pad" will help support the barrel.

If you are new at this, and it sounds like you are, be sure that the barreled action is centered in the stock when bedding. I use a few thicknesses of tape on the barrel to assure that it is centered in the forearm and this usually takes care of centering the action - but do a visual check while the bedding is still soft. BE SURE TO USE LOTS AND LOTS OF RELEASE AGENT ON THE ACTION AND BARREL AND TAKE THE TRIGGER OFF THE ACTION WHEN BEDDING.

Just my experience.

george,
thanks for the reply.
i have bedded a few rifles.
i have a blank 1000 master stock.
i'm pretty sure i will let a professional do the stock work.
but i an curious about options for the actual mounting.

your pillars would be to the stock lower metal ?

leave the mag in ?

its the uniquness of the actual mounting....

thanks

If it was my gun I'd glue a davidson follower in place of the magazine and let Alex Sitman pillar bed the stock for you.

lynn...thanks

would you use the oem bottom metal or go with a simple triger guard and the forward screw out on its own ?

thanks again

Mike if it was my gun I'd J-B Weld a Davidson follower in it myself.I would then get a simple factory type ADL trigger guard either in factory black or one of the aluminum ones like Dave Kiff sells at Pacific Precision. The choice would depend on the stocks color and there is no reason to go wild on a trigger guard.I like nice looking guns but I am not impressed by a good looking gun that doesn't shoot.

I would not use a BDL trigger guard with the long floorplate. You want the pillar holding the action and you don't need a thin floorplate sitting on the front pillar complicating things

If you send the stock to Alex he will put two pillars in it that will fit inline with the original action bolts. On the trigger guard he sometimes beds a escutcheon into the stock and sometimes he doesn't.Bill Shehane uses a very similar escutcheon to hold his aluminum buttplates in place and he probaly sells them as well.Picture a 1/4 inch aluminum plug wth some huge knurling on its outside surface. You hog out the area around the trigger guards two mounting screws and fill the two holes with bedding compound and insert the escutcheons. When the bedding compound dries you now have a aluminum pillar with threads in it to hold the trigger guard.I would leave that up to him.He just sent my newest heavygun back about 3 weeks ago and he used 3 pillars on a 10 inch BAT action. His work is extremely nice.
