Minimum diameter for a 700 Rem

What is the minimum diameter barrel that can threaded for a Remington 700? I am trying to reuse a barrel and am trying to find out how far it can be set back to use a smaller diameter case.

I prefer a larger shoulder than 1.100 but you could probably go as small as that if you had to.

1.150 is the smallest I have gone on when trying to reuse a factory barrel...

I've done one using a factory take off barrel that I had a shoulder of 1.120 but as Dennis said I prefer to have more. I mainly build hunting rifles, and use quite a few take off barrels. I have once turned one down, and made a threaded sleave for it in order to cheat a few thousandths so I could set it back further than the factory contour would let me. not sure of your situiaton, but just a thought.

If you look at how a Savage barrel is fitted using a barrel nut, I see no reason why a Rem 700 couldn't be done the same way with a 1.062" barrel shank. The Rem is 16 tpi which means you could not use the Savage nut, but would have to make your own.

Personally, I think the barrel nut is butt ugly and I like to barrel Savages like the Rem 700, but it could be done.

Hi Mark,

Ain't heard from you in quite some time.......How are you, anyway?

Consider that the shoulder will be pretty narrow (barrel dia. minus tenon dia. divided by 2) if you go much under the 1.200 LV diameter.

I've gone as small as 1.150, with a standard 1.062 diameter tenon........I believe that to be minimum. If I had an action that has had the thread trued, I'd tack the amount the thread is over 1.062 on to the 1.150.

If the cartridge has a small case diameter you could machine an adatper sleeve with internal and external threads. The barrel would screw into the adapter and the adapter into the receiver. No, I haven't tried it.
