I would like to have different pieces of metal engraved (bolts with serial numbers, turning pilots with sizes, etc). At the last match, a person told me just to go to a jeweller(sp) it would be a lot cheaper. As history shows, he is probably right once again. However, I like the idea of buying a tool and then being able to use it when needed. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hermes engraving machine, sometimes eBay and Amazon, probably not cheap but does nice job! Other than that there used be small vibrating handheld engravers to scratch your SSN onto your tools!

By some sort of magic the SS# has now become your "Taxpayer ID number" and can be used, but the DL# is a better bet.
 
+ 1 for a good old used New Hermes Panograph. Find a trophy shop and they probably have at least one and will engrave for less than a jewelry story in most cases. And they might even sell you one with a diamond stylus and a motor attachment and rotating cutter. You can still get parts and fonts, but most places are going to the computerized machines.

When I owned my gun shop, I made a LOT more money selling and engraving trophies for all sorts of sporting events. Wish I had one of my three old New Hermes machines.

Once you get one, you can start practicing (and playing) cutting nameplates for your gun cases, engraving you WWII Zippo Lighter etc.
