Maximum distance 308/200gr SPBT or SMK

Heavy Bullets in 308

Peter:

We have a contingent of shooters hear in the east shooting 210 Bergers at 1000 yards. We are starting them out at 26020-2650fps and they are still supersonic at 1000. We found VV 550 the answer to our powder problems. We all are shooting 30-32 inch barrels.

That may be the way

,,,,,,,,,,,,to go.Varget and the 200gr/28" don't seem to get the full potential of the limited 308 case capacity.

Thanks Nat

Peter,

Here in Australia (& Britain), we shoot 200 SMKs & 210 SMKs & Bergers out to 1200 yards with velocities up to 2800 fps for the lighter projectile & 2700 for the heavier ones. While we all use barrels in the 32-34" range, probably the most important requirement is to have a long throat. Stuffing those big projectiles down onto the primer (well almost) in a standard chamber isn't going to give you much joy velocitywise.

However if you do go to those throat lengths, you're on your own working up a load because you are talking about a significantly larger case capacity & the potential to use somewhat more than book powder capacity. Powders of choice are Varget, VV N150 & VV N550.

On the other hand, the 190 SMK is a very forgiving projectile. We've found that despite not being able to get it loaded fast enough to stay supersonic much past 1000 yards, it's still an extraordinary accurate projectile at 1200 yards.

Nat, what is the base to ogive length on your 210 bergers? Have you tried 210SMK's also? Unfortunately (based on cost) I have found that the 210SMK's are deadly in my 300mag but haven't ventured past 190 for my 308's. I'm running a 308 32" Lilja 1:10 twist.

Also, do you plan on shooting Butner next weekend assuming the forecast of rain doesn't happen?

SAAMI Spec 308 length

Peter:

The SAAMI spec 308 OAL is 2.808 I load my 308s 2.995 to 3.15 OAL depending on throat. I am shooting them in a long action gun. I like my Bergers .020 into the rifling and I like my Sierras with a .030 to .070 jump.

Nat, do you recall what type of reamer you are using, neck diameter and chamber length?

Guys, I shoot a 308 blaser LRS2 with a 24.5in barrel and 1 in 11 twist, finding it hard to get berger VLDs from my Location in ireland and was looking for optimum weight VLD that wood be good to go for f class at 600- 1k, Thinking of 175 weight with my 1 in 11 twist running them at average vL of 2750 using n540, what do you guys think regarding powder and weight range for long range shooting with a 24in 1 in 11 twist barrel, In the same type rifle in 243 cal the 95g VLDs are outstanding so was trying to stick to the berger VLDs, thanks.

What neck tension

I used a 95 PT&G 95 Palma Chamber reamer and a PT&G .3085 / 1.5 throating reamer.

Nat
,,,,,,,,,,,,,

do you use? What's your neck size?
Thanks to you all for your replies.

Shoot well
