Max Length for a Savage 112 Action

I have a Savage 112 I am looking to rebarrel to a 6.5-284. What is the max barrel length and taper I can go with that the action can support. I don't need to make weight and I can add weight to balance the rifle. Brunos has Shilen barrels on sale and it fits my buget at the moment, just wondering which one to order.

The Savage factory F Class and F/TR barrels are 30" and thick to the end. There are many extremely heavy barrels installed on Savages without a problem. It has the same strength as a Remington and can handle a heavier barrel load than a Remington because of the floating head and loose bolt fit.
 
Savage Action / Barrel

I have a Savage Long Action with a 28 inch 6X284 barrel with a muzzle break making it about 30 inches overall. The contour on my barrel is the same as the factory varmint. It supports the barrel just fine.

It'll support a pretty heavy barrel. On a 110 single shot action I have a 29" barrel, shouldered, 1.25" at the receiver and .975" at the muzzle. It also has a large diameter 4" long muzzle brake. This barrel is floated right up to the recoil lug. No problems and the gun shoots very well.
 
Here is a great source of barrels

The 30" F-class and FT/R Savages both use the Target action which has an extra screw. The 30" bulls (no taper) are heavy suckers. I have a couple of 28" Shilen LV profiles and have had no problems. As long as your bedded good you should be fine.

Jim is a great guy to do business with. He can get you any Shilen or McGowen pre-fit you want in any length you want for these prices. You just have to wait the 12-16 weeks on the Shilen. McGowens are much faster.

If you are looking for a pre-fit, hard to beat this deal. If you have you reamer and can chamber yourself, then Bruno's is better.

I have a Savage 112 with a 26" factory contour barrel on it. I added a Farrell one piece scope base which may help stiffen the action. I bedded the barrel about 1-1 1/2" in front of the lug. The rear tang is free floated. I think it would handle a 28-30 inch barrel.
