Marlin MXLR

G'day All

I know that this is not realy a benchrest question but here goes anyway..
Well now that my action build is coming to a close i have a few other projects in the pipeline.. The first one being my Marlin MXLR lever gun in 308 Marlin express..
I bought it a few years ago and it shoots ok, but brass is impossable to get. Factory ammo starts at arround $60 for 20 and thats just too damn expencive..
The bore is in realy good shape and has been lapped, but there is some very bad scoring in the rifleing about 4mm in front of the leed (caused by the factory pilotless chamber reamer).
So i was thinking about rechambering it to 307 Winchester. I already have a 308 WIN reamer (the two are the same except for the rim) The 307 is a little longer than the 308MX and so would take out the rough patch in the rifleing.

My question is how dificalt are marlin barrels to take off? Has anyone done it? Or know a smith who does them?
Looking at the barrelled action it looks threaded on but with a very short tennon.
I'll probably just put the thing in the barrel vice and give it a try but just thought i'd ask first..

Cheers

Take off the.............

mag tube first!!:D:D Yeah, that shouldn't be too difficult. Make up a wrench w/parallell sides, and most make form-fitting fibreglass inserts to cushion the receiver as its being unscrewed. I don't know how tight they are, I believe the .308 Marlin is a bit more pressure, check the Hornady manual. A guy in school took off a .35 Rem. barrel and said it wasn't too difficult. (Now watch, since I said that, YOURS will be the one welded on. :D:D) HTH:)
