Looking for a 222

Hi, I'm thinking of picking up a 222 for a little groundhogging and paper punching and have seen a few moderately priced options with second hand guns, mainly the Sako, 700 and 722.

I'm wondering if there is some other mfgrs I should look for, hoping to find something in a semi heavy or heavy sporter barrel.

I have a friend that.........................

has a SAKO 491 w/rings for sale. I have shot it and it is excellent :). It has a SAKO medium sporter barrel, and you wouldn't have to put any money in it. It typically shoots one inch, and better, at 200 w/factory trigger. Its in at least excellent (95%). I think its been in the field one time, at the range half dozen or so times. The guy never has the time to shoot , he runs his own business. He wants $1100  to your dealer.

I may get some more information on you from that, I was looking mainly at older rifles, nothing against the CZ as I have on in .204 and it's a great shooter but was hoping to find a Vixen heavy barrel but probably would need the stars to align for that.

This is heavier than..........................

a sporter, but not so heavy as a conventional heavy barreled varminter. The S491 has the larger action, and larger diameter bolt. When you look at it, it is deceptive-appearance vs. weight. I'll ask him to measure the muzzle so I can tell you. I can't post pix, though, I'll ask if he can.

I picked up a vintage Rem 700 varmint in 222 Rem last year with the vintage 12X leupold fine duplex scope. Pretty nifty combination that I could possibly be persuaded to part with.

another option is to find a Savage mod 12 rifle and order in a new barrel in .222 from Shilen or Sharpshooter.

I have a 40XBR that is in prefect condition. My wife just went in for a second knee replacement after the first became infected. I will have to sell a few of my rifles. This is a 20" barrel that is all as it came from the factory back in 1977. I can send more info or you can call me at 541-753-3204. I would like to sell it for $900.

there is a sako hvy barrel on gunbroker right now.

Thanks guys for the replies but a friend picked up an old Sako l46 heavy barrel for me at a gunshow, looks like it was hardly fired.

Once I started messing with it I saw why, 1-16" twist, shot the 50g bullets like crap, loading up 40g has produced a best of 5/8"@200yds.

I have a couple .222s, and for varmint work, the plastic tipped 40 grainers are outstanding. They make the duce and .223 into whole new calibers. The BCs are the same as the old 50-52 gr. HPFB bullets that were standard fare before these 40s arrived, and the uptick in velocity is considerable, as it the terminal performance. When I hear guys talking about being able more able to see their hits because of the lighter recoil of their 20s I just smile, because I have the same advantage with my older rifles and the relatively new bullets. They also do well in my Swift at 4,100 FPS.
