I have a f class savage in the 6.5x284 and have been doing a bench shooting at 500 yards with groups running between two 2.5 to 3.5 at 2780 fps. Is that acceptable or should i be using this gun for a garden stake? I also hear they shoot better at 3000 to 3100 fps. Any truth to that?

There is nothing wrong with those groups if they are at 500 yards, 2780 seems a little slow for a 140 gr. bullet, but more load data would be needed.

more powder :D....dont be scared to get into that 3100 mark, if your barrel can handle that pressure do it. just watch your brass, and dont try to push those limits

I shoot 140 gr bullets with 48grs of H4350 in my Light gun and 48.3 in Heavy gun. 30 inch barrels should produce 2960-3000fps.

thanks guys, another question i have is barrel life at that speed?

If you have it set back at 800rds, you'll get 1600 rds that are competitive. Some lasts longer, some less. Or shoot 1100 rds and don't set back. Either way, costs per shot is same!

The last 6,5x284 I barreled shoots in the 1" range at 425 yards, and 1.5" to 2" at 600 yards.. Krieger 8 twist bbl LV contour 27", ss700 action. It shoots 142smk touching or 140 VLD's .008" jammed shoot equally as well. 51-51.5 gr H4831sc. I think it could do better with a better trigger and stock.

I would not be happy with that accuracy, sorry.
