Leupold 36X

Just picked up a used 36X inch Leupold. I shot it in a fun match today. The clicks are way off. A click that should have changed it 3/4 inch was more like 1.5inch sometimes more. I had a nasty little tail wind that bit me on every yardage, but it was not as bad as the scope was showing.

If I went 2 clicks past my target move then back it seems to put it were I need it. Any way Leupold can fix this, or is it nature of the best. BTW 1/4min scopes suck. Glass is good I used a buch of hold off.

Leupold 36

Before you go too far, set the Rifle on a rest, and while looking through the scope, move it one click at a time. It is suppose to move 1/4 inch at 100 yards.

I know a lot about 36 Leupolds, have had multitudes of them apart. The only thing that could cause what you are seeing is a detent in the turret skipping a spot, or more.

But, the good thing about Leupold is that Lifetime, unconditional warranty...............jackie

Pay attention to Jackie....

If the scope fails Jackie's suggested test...send it off to Leupold. But...the older competition Leupold's were not famous for their dead on windage and elevation adjustments.

Good luck with your testing....virg

Thanks for the info. Scope was lightly used when I bought it. I have experience with Leupolds that needed an extra few clicks then back to the spot to get rid of some of the movment. It was getting in my brian a bit, the condition was real switchy and kept changing as I was trying to dial for it. LOL going past then back is not a big deal unless it is timed with no flags. Makes it worse when the conditin you want to pull the trigger in is coming and going.

1st match with this scope. I have only got to shoot in 3 others. They were shot with a borrowed T36. Glass is better on the Luepold but the T36 had better manners. It ended up beating me. I shot a 99 5x out of a possible 100 at 2-300yards. Dropped 10points no xs at 400. At 400 I had to dail in some wind also. Elevation was 1inch low 1st shot on sighter at 400. 1 click 2 inches high. up 3 more then 3 down conditon switched. LOL. My son was watching, gave me the Daddy you cussed out loud.

I am ready for it sat. Monday the scope will be off to Leupold. This match shooting is bad, I get more fired up for a local groundhog shoot than the 1st day of deer season. I see an IBS card in my future.

On the subject of scope adjustment....
The late Dick Thomas of Premier Reticles told me that it is always a good idea to go past the intended adjustment point by a few clicks, and then come back to the intended adjustment, when making an adjustment that requires turning either turret knob in a COUNTERCLOCKWISE direction. This would not be the case if the adjustment requires turning clockwise. The reason for this is that when you are turning counterclockwise (with a RH thread) you are backing the adjustment contact point away from the erector tube, and depending on the leaf spring that opposes it to move the erector tube. By going farther than the intended adjustment, and then coming back to the desired point of adjustment you will be pushing the tube directly. Bottom line, you should always go to your final point of adjustment with a clockwise turn of the turret knob. There is no need to go past when the desired direction of adjustment is clockwise.

Another adjustment complication comes from the relationship between the width of the contact points of the trurrets, where they touch the erector tube, and the fact that they are resting on a cylindrical surface (the erector tube). If the center of the erector tube is not close to coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the scope, and the amount of adjustment is of large enough magnitude, there may be a crossover such that an adjustment to elevation will also cause a change in windage, and vice versa. Weaver's Micro-Track system and Sightron's ExactTract system are both designed to get around problems in this area.

In my experience....

It was getting in my brian a bit, the condition was real switchy and kept changing as I was trying to dial for it. LOL going past then back is not a big deal unless it is timed with no flags. Makes it worse when the conditin you want to pull the trigger in is coming and going.

In my experience, it is never a good idea try to follow condition changes by dialing a scope. After setting the zero for the prevailing condition, it is best to hold off if the condition changes. Saves time and exasperation.

Virg I waited, but I was watching my choosen condition come and go at an alarming rate. LOL. Mind starts racing OMG I might need to adjust for another conditon. I can not get the scope adjusted, holy cow I got four minutes to get 3 more on record. Crap I just chucked two into the 8 becuase I was not picking up a evil little tail wind that was making the mirage stand up. I know it is there but I can not see it. The 400 line got a little intense in my little world. 9 minutes of pure terror in my head, well 6-7. Not sure racecar drivers get that big of a rush.

Great info Boyd. Gonna play with that and check the scope on some 1/4 inch grid paper I have. Still goes to Leupold. Will not hurt for them to run through it. Might get a Dot put in it.

Tuckerize your scope. That ends the problem with flat springs once and for all.
