Latest Opinion on Russian Primers

What are your opinions today on Russian primers? Specifically LR primers if it matters.

I have read of problems with misfires with others attributing it to either not seating far enough, short height dimension and heavier cups. At the same time, I'm still hearing of some long range shooters achieving low ESs with them. I'm pretty sure German Salazar is still a fan based on his own testing and match experience. So what are peoples recent experiences with them?

TScull,
What powder are you trying to use with the Russian Primers? I tried to use the Wolf LR Magnum primers with REL 25 and it does not work! I have got them to work with Varget and IMR powders. Primer seating depth made no difference trying to light off 79 – 81 grains of the REL 25.

i have sold/am selling a total of about 450,000 since obamas election...no returns.....i have had ZERO ISSUES WITH LARGE RIFLE, 223 SR nor SMALL RIFLE.
i have been party to solving "issues" of other users.....in all cases but one it was failure to seat the primer...in one case it was a gun issue.
i just shot 5 -5 shot groups with a semi custom rem 700 308 win.....ag was under .4......all with russian primers...std large rifle/imr 8208 powder/lc new match brass/nosler 168's.
with only an 18x scope and a catarac in my shooting eye....me thinks the primer did not hinder the function of the rifle.

i have not used mag lr nor mag sr.....

Mike,
I am using K&M’s Priming tool with the Dial Indicator to seat the Wolf LRMs. Seating them just as deep as the leverage from the handle will let me. I have tried them In may .300 ATLAS Chambering using REL 25 in a Custom M700 with a Kiff Bolt, a BAT Model M and a BAT Model L. The Wolf LRM primers will set the charge off. I purchased 5000 of these primers to use in these BR rifles. I just stuck with the FED 210M’s I was using. Now with that said. They work fine in my M700 .22-250 with Varget, M700 .243 Win with IMR 4064, M700 .308 Win with IMR 4064 and a TC Encore in .35 Whelen using Varget.

Baron,

I will be developing a 7mm with a case capacity comparable to a .284 Win. I'll be starting with 4831SC and may try Re17, both with Berger 180 VLDs.

Tim,
I don't think that you will have any problems with the 4831SC. Would be interested to know how they work with the REL17.

I have used Wolf Small Rifle Magnum priners in .204, .223, and 6BR with 2230C, 8208, RL15, Varget, and N150.
The work great with all.

Good primers

The Wolf small rifle magnum primer has given very good results in my 220 and 6mm Beggs cartridges using N133, H322, H4198 Ext, Norma 200 and Hodgdon's Benchmark.

In addition to producing small extreme spreads, the Wolf primers burn cleaner than any I have ever used. Normally, I clean primer pockets after each firing when using Winchester and Federal primers, but with the Wolf primers it is not necessary.
