Laser target

Can anyone recommend a laser target system for a 22lr rifle? I am looking for something that allows for practice of bench technique without having to use live ammo.

Fergus,
I am intrigued. I dont think I have ever heard of such. Please add a little more information about this kind of system. I would love to find out more and maybe be able to adapt it for CF SR BR, if that were possible.

The one or two I have heard of were designed for 50 ft or less indoors. Might check with Pilkington or ask on the target talk forum they sponsor. There are a lot of position shooters there that would likely have more insight than myself. There was a Rika ( spelling?) system for sale a short time ago.

A number of years ago Art Cook was involved in selling a computer based system with some kind of interface with rhe rifle called "NOPTEL" or something similar. I think it was designed for position shooting but could be used for benchrest and other shooting sports also. I never saw one in use and don't know if it's still around, or who made it.

As far as I know, this type of unit irrespective of brand is designed to operate with a single receptor (target) for the laser.

Would that offer you any benefit with what you are attempting to emulate.

Ok, I guess the question is because I dont know what I dont know. I have seen the "beam hit" (http://satsweb.net/beamhit/Products/LaserMarksmanshipTrainingSystemsLMTS/tabid/872/Default.aspx) in the market for some time now. More recently I have seen stuff like this: http://www.targetshootingproducts.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=542

I have also heard of other systems for handguns that allow a laser to be inserted in the chamber and actuated by pulling the trigger, which records the "shot" on the "target". Really just trying to find out whats on the market to understand what, if any, options are in my price range.

I can see how a laser system might help with pistol or position practice. The usefullness in benchrest escapes me. Movement with wind/light conditions is my personal bugaboo with benchrest. Can the laser be influenced by wind?

Hi Don, I would think that if using a beam not visible to the unaided eye that all effects would be very similar except of course the wind ( nothing physical to work against). Then again if there is a mirage there could be a deflection of the beam and wind does move mirage waves around to the point of dispersion. Just assumptions on my part.

I have a few of them. My interest is position shooting and they work very well for training in 3p and prone. One is a Noptel and the other is a Scatt. Niether use a laser I believe they use infrared LED's.

In the case of the noptel there is a detector/transimitter unit that mounts onto the barrel of the rifle. The target has a reflector on it. At 50' or less the reflector can be reflective tape or a plastic reflector. For 50meters they use like a surveying reflector. The barrel mounted device plugs into a PC. The pc runs some software that displays an image of a target and as you move the rifle/pistol/cap gun/ or whatever the unit is attached to it displays your point of aim and records a trace. The shot is detected by the "sound" of the firing pin falling.

The Scatt Is very similar but has only a detector that mounts onto the barrel. The target assy, which comes with the Scatt, has some infrared LED's and the detector "sees" this. Generally, other than that it works much like the Noptel.

The Scatt tends to be more popular because it is cheaper. Both work very well. Many top position shooters practice with these devices. You can probable see more on them but googling "Scatt" or "Noptel".

There is actally a third unit that is called the RIKA. Pilington sells these. While Pilkington is a great outfit I would not own a RIKA. This was the first one I had and it was squirrely and I sold it.
