Lapua scenars

Hello guys,

I am just wondering if anyone has any experience with 155gr Lapau Scenars as long range hunting bullets? I am shooting a hopped up 700 in .308 and have heard great things about these bullets as long range target bullets.

Do they have any hunting applications?(mainly coyotes and deer)

They are a very good bullet on paper but would stay clear on game as I have found them to be well too hard and non expanding. If you want to use a match bullet for hunting try A max or berger VLDS, top bullets IMO

My experience with 155 gr Scenars...

...is the same as Rich K's. Think you have to drive them much faster than the average .308 Win will for them to work effectively as a game bullet.

Depends on the definition of "match." All Bergers are referred to as "match grade" because of the Quality Control standards they're held to in production. The VLD Hunting bullets (with the original style thin jackets) are positively devastating on game, and kill like lightning. The line between "match" and "game" bullets has gotten a bit blurry in some respects over the past few years, so choose carefully, and the choice will be rewarded.

Shooter failure is usually the problem, and the bullet gets blamed.
Shoot a deer through ribcage with a 155 scenar, and it is dead....period.

Coyotes....well... hit them with anything you have lying around.
 
The Scenars are like a bomb. If ya want a good hunting bullet go with the 155gr Berger VLD or the 175 Berger VLD.:D

Everybody has different opinions and experiences and this is why we have a forum. I think that lapua act like military ball. I have found a ribcage shot has the same size exit hole. Now this may be dead if shot through the heart but there is no degree of error allowed when there is no expansion and potentially less of a trauma channel. So unless for some reason you have 100s of scenars or can get them for nothing IMO I would chose a better bullet for the purpose of hunting

you could call it shooter error when i put the bullet thru the heart, but when all that is recovered from an AMAX on a 170# doe is the bullet jacket, that is bullet failure. if it had hit heavier bone, it would have been a wounded animal.
 
Hey guys,

I have given up the idea of shooting Scenars at game. I seen a post on a different forum with a picture of a 155 Scenar that had been shot thru a doe..THE LONG WAY.. and it looked like you could simply reload it. It was a bit deformed but very little.

I know anything shot thru the lungs or heart is dead walking but the question is how far will it get before it dies and and will you find it. This is just asking to lose critters IMHO.

Think I am gonna try some of those 155 VLD hunting bullets from Berger. Trying to get my .308 fast and flat as possible way out there.
