Just thinking

Group with 6X scopes. I see that you don't shoot Hunter class. just a little more challenge. Before we only had Hunter class (Score shooting with 6X scope) and the group shooters wanted to shoot it.

SOOO why not try group with Hunter class guns?

Want a challenge in group shooting? replace your competition scope on your sporter 6PPC, 10.5 pound gun with a fixed 6X power hunter class scope. and go for it. There’s nothing that says you cant.

Mirage would not be much of a problem with a 6X scope. The problem would be seeing bullet holes at 200/300 yds. I have an old 6X scope. May give it a try, just for comparison. When you’re 75 with corrected vision, a 6X rifle scope is not appealing. Not even on a deer rifle.

Good ideal, just have a Class for it.
works for me and 81 year old Ray Perry. most of us are "old folks"

I have enough challenge shooting BR with 40 power scope. I sighted a friend's rifle in with a 3-9 and that was enough for me. I can't see me taking a accurate rifle and handicapping myself. If I just squint a bit when I pull the trigger, would that work? Why not go to open sights? To each his own.

Group it is....

Has anyone thought about "Hunter Group" matches ?

Don't know about a "Hunter Class Group" shoot, but I do shoot group at New Braunfels with my Hunter class rifle. Won small group at 200 in one match. I just replace my Leopold 6X Hunter scope, with a Weaver 36. But using a 6X scope, one could see all their flags in the scope field.

You're right on...

The non- flat 2.25 inch fore end is another issue as well. I do enjoy Hunter Class Score but in Michigan you're usually shooting against yourself only.

The Hunter Class has greatly diminished since the NBRSA authorized VFS. The general feeling is "who wants to shoot with a 6X scope?" One thing about VFS is that with a 36X scope or more, you can see your mistakes immediately. No spotting scope necessary.

I'll pick on Wilbur to quote.

I'm not going to look, but I think Sporter class started as a 6mm version of LV & HV.

Sporter class originated with a .23 Cal. restriction - to escape the .222 and variants thereof - and 8X maximum scope magnification/power. Within four years, the magnification restriction was lifted - don't recall the exact dates, but just read several AMERICAN RIFLEMAN (yes, the NRA publication) reports covering several years (mid -late 1960s) of bench-rest evolution, into the contemporary classes. Most of the articles were authored by

Virg, and all, in the NBRSA, VfS did not decrease Hunter Class attendance - prior to sanctioned VfS, bleeding badly, from multiple cuts! All-time high attendance at the NBRSA Hunter Nationals, was at Casper, WY, 2000: we had 105, or 106 competitors. By 2008, we were down to less than 1/2 of that again . . and, attendance continued to decline until the NBRSA decided to sanction VfS, including a National Championship, & including a TWO GUN (Hunter and VfS), after which, attendance has increased each year - albeit modestly. Oh, VfS wasn't accepted by the NBRSA board, until 2013 - attendance at the Hunter Nationals, that year, was measly: <40 maybe 36-38.:(

I believe that one of the major wounds Hunter Class suffered, was the demise of the TcL(s), which motivated people to show up in mobs (teams) to prove that they were the top dogs in the country. The TcL(s) were fueled by coverage in the now defunct PRECISION SHOOTING magazine: The two Trans Continental Leagues were the life-blood of the Hunter Class. Keep 'em ON the X! RG

P.S. If there is any interest, I'll dig the magazines out and provide the dates of the various issues.

Hunter Class (My experience)

I got talked into buying a hunter class rifle(10lb),by my mentor, back in 1999. At that time, VFS was gaining popularity and has since become a popular venue,In most regions. you can compete in VFS with any legal group class rifle except unlimited.

My Rifle was chambered in 30 Fat Albert. Built by Cecil Tucker. Its unfortunate that the “Fat Albert” Character’s creator, Bill Cosby, was recently sentenced to 3 to 10 years in State Prison for sexual predation. Many fans were surprised to find out what Bill was doing behind the curtains.:)

The 30 Fat Albert was a very accurate Hunter Class Chambering. I shot it in a couple of VFS matches. Recoil was quite noticeable. At the end of the match, you felt the effects for several days.

Making brass from 284 win brass was a real PITA. I had Neil Jones make me some form Dies but the process was still labor intensive.

The only thing I have left from that Rifle is the 6X scope. I just cant see myself shooting group with a 30 Fat Albert. Has nothing to do with the character.

I think shooting group with a full blown Hunter rifle (including 6X scope) would be fun. However, I also think, I would be in the minority. Maybe this idea could be used as a money maker for the club hosting the traditional score Hunter match. Just an idea - after the Hunter match - interested participants could pay $5 and shoot one 5 shot group with their Hunter rifles. Winner takes half - club gets half.

Has anyone thought about "Hunter Group" matches ?

Last time I did that - complete with the 6x scope - was at a Minnesota State (group) Championship - many years ago - I finished 2nd at 100, and 3rd at 200 (run & gunned:p) and 3rd in the Grand. The only, "holy cows", came from the scorer and the target crew: not a single, "I never believed you", from the contestants.;) If you don't win, it can't be any good - even if it finishes ahead of the vast majority of precision rifles, and, "can't possibly compete for anything but last."

Way back - we held a few "club matches", where we shot for both group and score, using our Hunter Rifles - never could get anyone above the club level to consider that format. Before the move to the 6-bull (sighter, plus five reocrds), the NBRSA 300 Yd. target was a two bull deal (sighter & record) moving backer was required: tie-breaker was groups size.

Another throw-back group experience, from the River City days, [the late] Dan Jarvis, attended one of our NBRSA registered events: group/Hunter events (group Sat. Hunter Sun.). Dan was toting a new - never fired - Larry Smart smithed 30x47 and, to fire-form, shot it, for group, Saturday. Regrettably, I talked him out of paying the entry fee, and put him down on bench ten, and just hung targets and required him to shoot during the matches . . . his .28xx was the only 100Yd. Agg, "in the twos" that day.:cool: Of course, for the record, his Agg didn't count. Another "my bad" on yours truly.

:p Those were the "good 'ol dayz!" Keep 'em ON the X! RG

Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey!

Glen, I too am greatly saddened by Bill Cosby's behavior. He was my favorite comedian. He was never political, totally unlike today's comics. He was also a talented actor and I admired him. Fat Albert like many 30 calibers can have a surprising amount of recoil. That heavy bullet seems to wallop you out of proportion to its weight. I agree with the people who disliked the 6 power scope. I have a hunter gun moldering in my safe; 2" wide for-end, Stohle action with magazine cut out and 6 power Weaver scope in 30 X 44. It was a nice effort to introduce people to BR shooting who owned hunting rifles but it evolved into custom actions, Jewell triggers and custom stocks. Even then they might have shot well but the 6 power rule doomed the venue.
So you are 75! Listen Glen. You may be interested in the new medical, geriatric, genital tune up kit. It consists of a vial of testosterone, a prescription for Viagra and a little battery operated crane to, as the advertisements say, "enhance your lifestyle". Tim
