Just Missed Out.

My local gun shop had a Winchester Low Wall for $200 Australian, but by the time I discovered it I was too late as someone else had already put down a deposit. Would very much like to find out a bit about Winchester Low Walls and their suitability for building an accurate light varmint rifle. Is the trigger any good and can a gunsmith get a clean break of about 3 lbs out of it? Do they readily adapt to small rimless calibers or is a rim essential? What are they like for extraction, that is will they extract a tight case better or worse than a Martini Cadet? The rifle in question was chambered for 25/20, but I had in mind something like 221 Fire Ball with a quality barrel. Hope someone can help. Reguards Murphy.

Huhhh??

What's the Ozzie dollar worth these days?

!!

200bucks for a low wall?

200 dollars wouldn't buy you a picture of a good Winchester up here......

To Alinwa

An Aussie dollar is worth 82 US cents at present, The rifle had a 26" octaginal barrel original wood work and a worn but probably useable bore. Do you consider this to be a good deal or a bad deal.

I'm not a Winchester guy although I've got probably 5-6 pre-64's at any given time. Furthermore I'm not a low wall guy but I have worked on some and kept kinda' "outside looking in" current for 30yrs and I can't imagine finding even a serviceable action for under 500.00, rimfire or centerfire.

I'm saying that was a GREAT deal.....

Unless I'm missing something obvious?

I don't think you missed anything but are they any good for converting to other calibers? If they are any good and I see another one I will acquire it.;)

murphy, I don't know. :)

I've worked on them and reblued them but know nothing about them as far as building off of them. I do know people that do this, they're not into extreme accuracy, but varminting to 200-250yds.

My understanding is that these make a fine carryabout rifle for mild chamberings up to .223 velocities but I'm in over my head here. I have acquaintances who really get off on singleshots and I just overhear stuff. It's like me, a concrete guy, sitting in a room full of truck drivers........ I hear what's being said but it's not really registering!

Someone here should be able to help you though.

Like Alinwa I've looked at them, but never had one, never even held one in fact. If you can get a GOOD Lo-Wall rifle for $AU 200 and want one I'd go for it. They're probably not the best action for high pressure rounds with large body diameters, but something like a K Hornet, Mashburn or K Bee, or a .222 R would probably work very nicely in a Lo-Wall action.

I've seen some genuinely ratty looking old falling block and rolling block rifles around here that had price tags that made my eyes water - and not from happiness either.

To turn an old Winchester falling block into a good varmint rifle would probably require finding a knowledgeable gunsmith in Oz though for bushing the firing pin, working over the trigger, and the like.

Lo-wall

Murph-That's a steal!!!! I paid $700 for mine in the '90's. I'm fond of singles gut only own three now. Anyway, my .243 is very accurate at 100 yds. Haven't shot it much farther than that. It is my favorite carry gun mounted with a 1.5-4 Leupold. One thing for sure-it is a very strong action. For reasons too long to explain, I split a case and fused a primer to the brass with a mis-identified load. Rifle still shoots fine. This is a good action-period. I'm looking for a Hi-Wall as we speak. Find another for that price and go for it!! V/R Greg

To Greg and others.

It's unlikely that I will see another one that good for $200 but it pays to hang around gun shops a lot as you never know what gets traded in. Some of the staff are not gun people and the occasional bargain slips through. Saw a fellow with a bunch of 32/20s at an arms fair a while back and he wanted $300 each for them but they were fairly rough. It's interesting that yours has been adapted for a rimless round.:D
