Could JB Bore Paste be used to lap a muzzle crown using a brass lap?I just re-cut a slightly damaged crown on a rifle with a Brownells chamfering tool and a brass pilot I went easy as I could but still ended up with some fine chatter marks, crown looks great though under 10x magnification but you can see the chatter just a little bit...you input or advise appreciated

Post this question on the "Gunsmiths Corner" Forum too.

Not a gunsmith and certainly never lapped a crown but I don't think JB is anywhere near aggressive enough to do what you want in the time you would want to do it. If the crown is good accuracy wise...why mess with it at all?

If the crown has slight chatter marks that are only visible under 10X magnification, but shoots fine I'd be leery of "fixing it" until the chatter marks were gone along with possibly the accuracy. I sort of doubt that you could remove or reduce the chatter marks with the Brownell's chamfering tool, especially if the crown as cut by a competent smith.

True story that might help. Long time ago, I cut off a barrel with a hacksaw, and evened up the barrel with a draw file. I don't remember how I cut the actual crown -- broke what little edge was there -- but it was by hand, carefully. Did I mention that I'm pretty good with a file?

It shot very well indeed.

Time passes, & me & Joel Pendergraft get a lathe & mill. Joel, anyway, has built record-setting rifles. More than one. So after a while, I figure "let's set that barrel up in the lathe & do it right..."

It only shot slightly worse. Probably because of changed barrel length, I guarantee you the machine work was first rate.

Now if you think the moral of this story is you can do work by hand that is as good as with a machine, I won't argue, but that's not it.

The moral is, if it is shooting very well indeed, leave it alone.
