Hello, I am new to benchrest central and to benchrest shooting. I had to quit shooting all of my heavy recoiling rifles because of arthritis. So I started looking for something that didn't hurt to shoot. I settled on a Savage 12BVSS in .223. After sighting in my Millett 4-24x45MM scope I found that I had a very accurate rifle to play with. My son who shoots a Savage 12BVSS in .308 has gotten into precision shooting and has shot a .750 group at 300 yds talked me into loading some ammo using precision methods. I have now shot a .187 group(5 rounds) and am getting excited about benchrest.

I know that 6PPC and 6BR are the hot cartridges, but I can't afford a new rifle now so .223 is it for the nonce.

I am retired (or just tired) and was a tool and die maker, an ex cop, a bush pilot, soldier, sailor and Coast Guardsman. I have learned a lot just from reading the posts on this forum, and look forward to learning more.

For now, it's that fine .187 group that has ya by the gonads. Soon it will be that .087 or even .0087. It's a fine sport and even better people....most days:p. Welcome!--Mike Ezell

If it works, do it. Welcome to this very interesting sport.
It is the best medicine for retirees that love to shoot since you can practice by yourself, not like trap, skeet, etc.
It will get kind of pricey over time though.
