I don't think I understand "glue it in"

Gentlemen,

My apologies for asking such basic questions, but I am still somewhat new to custom rifles, and especially my 6mmPPC. But I noticed in another thread discussion the unfamiliar term "glue it in." Apparently this is an alternative to bedding an action. My question is, are actions actually permanently glued into stocks? If so, how do you get them out if you ever wanted to change stocks? Also, is it better to glue rather than bed?

Gene, yes, the action is actually glued into the stock, usually with some type epoxy, opinions vary on which is the best, I use JB Weld.

The reason shooters do this is because it is a sure fire way to insure a totally stress free 100% action to stock attachment. Yes, a good pillar bedding with bolts will do the same thing, but in reality, gluing is much simpler.

Some shooters do 'bed' the action first, but on the last Rifles I have built, where the action to stock fit was pretty good, I just glued it in.

Many shooters worry about it coming loose, in all of my years, I have never had one that I glued in come loose. The problem is usually getting it out if the need ever arises.

To remove the action, you have to destroy the integrity of the bond. Heat is a good way. Many shooters simply lay an iron, (the kind you take wrinkles out with), on top of the action untill it will "sizzle spit", and that does the trick. A quick rap on the barrel will bust it loose.

You can look at it as doing a typical glass bedding job, only you accidentally forgot to use the release agent. Which, from what I have heard, is exactly how the whole concept originated.......jackie

Found this thread and glad I searched. Given a typical or common application, is the stock damaged or trashed ?
