how far can you reform brass

I read over at 6mmbr about fireforming a 22-250 brass to 6mmxc. Not only is the shoulder angle changed, but the diameter of the casing enlarged as well. Just how far can one go when reforming brass for a new design? Can I change the taper, shoulder angle and push the shoulder forward? Yes, I know quality of the brass makes a difference.

The parent cartridge in question will be a 7 x 57. I bought a Spanish mauser for gunsmithing practice and playing with the 7mm as a wildcat was one goal. No, the gun won't see competition, but if the cartridge proves itself, I may do it on a real action later.

Rocky, yes you can. That brass case started out as a little flat disc or "slug" of copper about the size of a marble...............THE WHOLE CASE is formed by hammering it over a series of mandrels.

BTW, if you have specific needs I can steer you right as far as what/how, I've successfully formed cases of all sorts.

I would have said it's much easier to neck down than to expand up :eek: and blowing a shoulder forward takes several steps whereas shoving it back is a simple press operation.........


We seem to disagree :)



But, to answer the first question it's ALL doable ;)

If you anneal the brass and use lube you can change brass to about anything, just remember to shrink, resize, to enlarge, fire form, non of it has to be done in one step
