Help! Remington 40xb factory trigger adjustment?

Howdy!
I have a Remington 40xb in 7.62 Nato. It is a repeater, it was apparently made in 1969, and it is near mint. It has the external trigger adjustment in the trigger shoe.

Trouble is, the trigger does not break crisply. No matter how I adjust the external adjustment. I have it out of the stock. There are 2 screws in front and one in back. All 3 are covered in the wax (?) seal from the factory. I understand I am not supposed to mess with the one in the back as that is the sear engagement.

When I pull the trigger, no matter where I set it, I can literally apply a bit of pressure, let up, and touch it with less pressure than before, and the sear will release. This is not just at the lighter pull weights.

I have adjusted triggers on two 700's that I have and they are good and crisp. I don't know what to adjust on this trigger, where it also has the external adjustment, to get it right. As I understand it, the 40xb is supposed to go down to about a pound and a half.

I have a Savage 110S silhouette target rifle that I got the factory trigger to 18 ounces and very, very crisp. I can't believe that the 40xb cannot be AT LEAST that good.

Does anyone have any experience with this trigger that they can help me with?

Thanks!
Greg

I would think if you PROPERLY adj a 700 trigger, the 40x should be no problem, but if you are calling the sealent 'wax'...........I dunno

Greg: For $70, Neil Jones, Saegertown Pa. will re-build/ repair your Rem 40x trigger. Can take it down to 1 pound minimum. Approx. 2 week turn-around time, only needs the trigger, not the entire rifle. He's done numerous Rem. triggers for me over the years, all excellent.

F.D., thanks for the info! I don't think it is broken, just not adjusted correctly. But I will keep that in mind.

Ernie, I called it the wrong stuff. It ain't wax. Seems more like glue or nail polish. I have not fiddled with the sear adjustment on my other Remingtons. I may not have them as good as they could be after all.
The external adjustment is what throws me off. I have not fiddled with a trigger with 4 screws.

I am gonna fiddle with it, but I am going to take notes on how many turns I take etc. so I can put it back to where it is now, if I can't get it where I want.

If I get REALLY aggravated, may I bring the rifle to you for help? I am not being sarcastic. I saw you mention something about Paris, Ky in one of your posts and it stuck in my memory, being as it is that I live in the Greater Metro Mount Sterling Ky region.

I am always looking to learn, although I am more interested in rimfire right now than centerfire. I just like good guns. Be forewarned, if I do get stuck and you are willing to help me, I am a gifted and talented pest!:) I will probably want to pick your brain for more knowledge! You will probably be okay from most of the pestering as I am generally short on time.

Thanks!
Greg

Trigger adjustment

Thanks Earlm! I go to rfc often, I had not noticed that sticky! Guess I am going to adjust sear engagement screws on all of my other Remingtons after all!

First, I am going to clean it out a bit with some lighter fluid.

Thanks!

Trigger sealant

Ernie, I called it the wrong stuff. It ain't wax. Seems more like glue or nail polish.

Thanks!

Greg,
Remington uses a sealant on their trigger adjustment screws that can be softened by playing a little heat on them. Get a hollow ground screw driver bit, I ground my own, to remove the screws once softened. After you get your trigger adjusted properly, seal the setting with some nail polish.

Thanks Lou!

Thank you Lou! I will do that.

Am I correct in my understanding that the factory 40xb trigger will only go down to about a pound and a half? I don't own a trigger pull gauge, I will have to find someone who does. I want to get the most out of the factory trigger that I can. Eventually I would like to get a Jewel trigger. I have not pulled one yet, but I have seen that most everyone that posts about them seems to love them.

Thanks!

Greg,
I've taken Remington factory triggers, disassembled and polished all contact parts to a mirror like finish. Shimming the trigger pin with pistol shims and a relacement sear spring from Brownells has produced a very crisp and light factory trigger. The Cadillac is Jewell and there are others I don't have experience with.

Thanks guys!

Just wanted to thank you guys for taking the time to help and give input! I will eventually go with the Jewell, but for now I am broke and will do my best to max out the factory trigger. Might get to learn something along the way.

Thank you all!

The screws on the inside will adjust the trigger way down to a good pull,on the back is a screw at teh top for travel, the bottom screw is for back lash and the top screw in front is for spring pressure.
That stuff that seals the screws is to keep them from getting loose, you can take the tip of your knife blade and lift it off.

Top Front screw=Over travel adjustment.
Bottom Front screw=Pull Weight adjustment (Omitted on 40X trigger group)
Aft Rear=Sear engagement.

40X repeater trigger group=pull weight screw is just aft of bolt release lever on underside of trigger group.

4 screw trigger group-Some one has bastardized your trigger group
