heavy gun rest

Why not just buy one from Bruce?
Bruce stopped making them some years back Vinny. Iirc, you have one,and you can pretty much look at it and see there's more work in it than there is money. If ya charge what they're worth, somebody'd give you a reputation for gouging.

The Bruce Baer rests were never made by Bruce they were made by Gary Alvey. They had a disagreement and Bruce never got anymore rests.
I just sold my Gary Alvey red stock and I have a Gary Alvey red rest that went with it.It has a 3 inch top with edgewood bag a 6 inch top with edgewood bag.I also have a spare top at 6 inches two spare center posts and a extra mariners wheel. Most everything is powder coated in bright red but the 6 inch windage top is polished aluminum with a polished aluminum mariners wheel.I also have a spare rear in red.
1 red rest.
3 red tops
2 red mariners wheels
3 center posts
1 polished windage top
1 polished mariners wheel
If anybody is interested and Jefferson would get first dibs as he e-mailed me earlier this week.
Ransom now makes a 3 piece rest system as well.

Wow, that is utterly shocking.

EDIT: note the extra sandbags on the back of the front rest in Pic #3 above. If you end up buying this rest get yourself a bag or 2 of lead shot for ballast. The back of the front rest will move all over the place on you, especially if you use a stop. This was part of why I sold mine for heavier rests.

Jefferson bought my rest and I will send Wilbur the money for an ad as I know we are not supposed to conduct business on these forums.
I was using as many as 3 bags of shot to make the rest weigh in at 129 pounds without the gun.
I have since received a mold from Bob Dorton for making 22 lead pound ingots that are somewhat flat and way more compact than the shot bags.I dip them in red Plasti-Dip so they don't scratch the red paint and look like part of the rest.
On the six feet that hold the rest in place on the bench I had Jay McMunn remove the factory points then bore holes in them and install armour piercing cores out of some old 30-06 rounds. They have been ground flat on one side so the trapped air and epoxy can escape without them popping back out. This combination of armour piercing tips and 88 pounds of extra lead along with a 75 pound rifle is now rock solid on the bench.
I will send Jefferson the weights as well.

That'll work. My current rest is made of 1-1/4 thick aluminum plate and is wider and has a longer wheelbase, and the rear is 2" thick. I don't know what they weigh but I have not had a problem since. When (if) I ever sell them, the first number of the 4 digit price tag will be a 2.

Jeff
My first digit was a 1 and the second digit was a 5 shipped with all the accessories.
I will either go with a 4-6 inch center post or twin posts 12 inches apart 2 inches in diameter. My forend is 18 inches wide and my rear buttstock rides on twin rails 5.5 wide.No windage on the front this time either. It will all be done on the rear half.

Im always in aww of these big guns and the equipment involved to make em work.....they are engineering marvels....there was a time tht I toyed with the idea of one (maby when my grandson is big enuff to tote one for me I will giv it a try agin)...but in 2002 I became disabled (thus I became the "expiper"..grin) and these big guns went the way of the dodo for me (Im the ole' DO-DO now)...Im resigned to shooting a LG that I can cary ....my front rest (Wichitaw (sp) with the crakl paint peelin off) is aprox 4 lb and can be stowed in my checked luggage on the airpalne....I just fly along and wink at the pretty stewardess as she gives me a lil' bag ov nuts..ahahaha....Im thanking my luky stars that IBS has saw fit to allow me to shoot a break on my LG,in HG ,so that now maby I can build a rifle with a cal bigger than 6mmBR (300 somthin or other) and toss a lil' more lead downrange at 1000yds..(the lil' BR has yet to fail me at 600yds)......no malase or jealousy here...my first number for my rest is a 7 and the second is 5.....and just two digits--hahaah....dont forget to hold into the wind....I look foreward to the combined nats. (good lord willing) and the fun of shooting with you guys in Sacremento......Roger
