Need a little help. Had a slight accident with my Harrell. It slipped and hit the bench top on the numbered dial. Has anyone take one of these apart? Wanting to know about removal of the numbered dial, rotating, end piece that is radial drilled and tapped with set screw, as opposed to the three set screws on the end that support the three ball bearings. Anyone have a drawing?:(

This is a Pain in the butt. I have done it a couple of times and it can be aggreviating. Depending on which direction you need to go, dictates how in depth you have to go. The knob has a small set screw. If the drum will not close all the way. Loosen this screw, line up the numbers, then take a center punch and tap the post in the center of the knob to close the gap. Tap the knob if it's the other way. Be very easy. Total disassembly is a pain and can drive a minister to drink. I have a buddy's here that I am about to disassemble so if you want pics, I can send some.

Thanks Hovis, I worked on this situation for several hours not wanting to take a chance in trying to remove the knob. It looked like it was staked but the dial would rotate freely and then engage the slide. It almost acted like a S&G combination lock with the fly and lever principal.
Please send pictures if you can and any help is appreciated.

If it is not working and has to be taken apart, send it to the Harrel Brothers. They know how it's made and are very helpful people.

I agree, They would likely fix it for you at no charge other than maybe shipping. Lynwood and Walter are good people.

That's the same thing mine did. Sending it to Harrell's is always and option. Might want to check with them and see how often they have change the design. I have two of the originals and have worked on others but not one with the needle bearings. I don't think there is any difference between the inserts though. I'll try and get time to take this one apart in the next day or two and take some pics of the steps. The one I'm about to work on is two clicks off with backlash.

Working now

Francis, The measure is working now within 2 tenths since I adjusted it.
Hovis, JP, I called Lynwood before starting and he was very helpful.
He first offered to fix the problem if I could send the unit to him but since Super Shoot is coming up and he was going trout fishing I did not want to take a chance on not getting it back in time.
Hovis, the first thing he said was as you said "which way was the slide in or out of adjustment". I told him out. Well about that time the phone went dead at my end. My Cell phone then had to be charged up so I continued to study the problem. I concluded that if I set the opening at my 28.3 gr setting confirmed with my dial caliper I could then push on the dial after removing the 3 ball bearings and springs. Lynwood said the worst thing someone can do is loosen the cross drilled set screw on the dial.
I think after 4 years the screw loosened a little bit with the three springs applying pressure in one direction and when the dial hit the table top it moved ever so slightly causing the measure to be off.
My thanks to Lynwood for his help and offer to repair the measure and to you for taking the time to respond. If you get some pictures I would like to see them.
