I have recently acquired a lyman 55 powder measure with a h l culver conversion. Wondering if it is still worth anything. Not real familiar with it. Any help? Thanks.

My father and I were close friends with Homer. In fact, dad helped him make the inserts for the last ten years of production (~1984 - 1994). PM me if you have any specific questions.

I also have a lot of photos of Culver in his shop (plus a bunch of us shooting at our range). In time I'll scan the prints and post them. Homer was one hell of a guy and he taught us a ton about benchrest. A true gentleman in every sense.

Homer Culver Conversion

Hell, I purchased a Culver insert in 1979. Still use it. Win alittle.
Do not see any reason to change. Close friends with the Harrels.
It is worth more than you think.

Many Thanks for the Help.

Not sure what I want to do with this Measure. I still have a few questions about it and appreciate the help so far. I may want it to go to someone that can use it as I have cut back on my reloading. Please keep the information coming. And Thank you all very much for your help.

this is one fine measure

It is as good a powder measure as any that are available today. Better than some with big names.

just my opinion -- take it, for what it's worth

Its a collector piece but not much value if youre lookin to sell it

I sold mine a couple years ago for $350 that is not chump change to me.
It is still a very useable measure.
That being said anything you own is worth exactly what you can find somebody to pay for it. Benchrest equipment whether it is current or vintage brings top dollar right here in the Benchrest Central classifieds and Wilbur's fees are dirt cheap.

Use your Culver/Lyman & enjoy it.

I bought a Culver/Lyman at an embarrassingly low price several years ago from an elderly shooter who was only interested in passing it along to someone who would use it - which I do. It's a prized keepsake & I wouldn't give it up for $350.

After several years, I added a Sinclair bottle adapter with baffle to the Culver, looking for more consistency in charge weights. It didn't make much difference. Later I added the same bottle adapter to my Redding measure, and again there was not much difference.

Then I bought a Harrell's measure, thinking that it might be more consistent than the Culver or Redding. Before I retired, I had access to an analytical balance that weighed to .1 mg, so I even tested my old Belding & Mull measure.

It turns out all of these measures are good, but none are significantly more consistent that any of the others.

The type of powder being measured & how you move the handle makes more difference than what measure it is. JMHO.

Regards,
Ron

I felt the same way Ron and did not intend to part with it. That was until I bought a March scope and lusted for another. I sold all my unused equipment including the Culver, two T-36's a Bald Eagle rest and a 6.5-20 Leupold.

I think that most of us had knew Homer and his dedication to everything he did could not honestly put a price on his Lyman/Culver measures--I am very fortunate to have two one of the rarer 1/2 click and a standard one.

In reality it should be worth as much as the current Harrell's

I don't even want it and I'll give you $90 in U.S. money fer it. Don't load many br and ppc any more, but when I do,, I use the Culver.. I use my Harrell for everything else.Mine is the half/click.. I met Mr. Culver @ the Super Shoot. He was very nice. He showed me a pic (w/about 30 people) The picture included Mr. Culver and Elmer Keith

I wasn't trying to throw a low ball price at you. I don't need it or rally can afford it,, but wouldn't mind having another.. I fully agree w/Gene Bukys. It's probably as good and reliable as any on the market today.I would say ,,, to a BR shooter,, that doesn't have a good measure,, a good price , $125-$175. Jus my thoughts.
