Gun Safe recommendations?

I only have a half dozen rifles, but there is jewelery, important papers etc. that I feel I should have in a better environment. What are the better gun safes out there that don't cost an arm and a leg? Something that is fire-proof for the papers etc?
Has anyone gone thru a fire and had good protection from their safe?
Thanks
Bryan

if you have a Sam's Club near by............their prices are the best you'll probably find. Check their site to see what is available.

Gun Safes..

It is hard to beat Drake Safes made by Greg Drake, Roxboro, NC. It is a real safe with multiple steel rods that go in all 4 directions of the door opening when locked. Don't Know if he has a web site. They can be trucked to your door. He makes multiple different sizes.

I would go to Sams or Costco and get a Sentry fire safe, the ones that are about the size of a small fridge, dedicated to fire protection. Use this for your valuable papers, pics, cd's, etc.

It is wise to search for a gun safe that is larger than what you need to store such valuables, problem is, guns don't fit in the smaller ones and they offer the best protection but are more easily taken..so hide accordingly.

If you want that kind of protection in a gun safe, it's big bucks. As far as a good gun safe, IMO, I would get the dial combo instead of the electronic.....that's just me though, not saying the electronics are bad, I just like the piece of mind that it won't crap out on me or get a "glitch"..rotary combos wear out over time sure but, how many times will you be in the safe over your school locker, those cheap locks last forever.

Definately store the jewelery in the gun safe though...harder to drag those out.

Call Frank Zykan at Zykansafe, he will answer all your questions and really put things into perspective.

Not sure what an "arm and a leg" is, but if you're like me it's under a grand.

The "H" series has the higher rating, either the 24 or 30 is a good safe.

Another vote is the GT 8423 from Password Crackers, shipping is included..looks like a nice bang for the buck.

When you decide on a safe, if it's going in a tight area, build a cardboard "dummy" safe and see if you can slide it through the doorways.

Cannon

My Son gave my a Cannon Safe he purchased at Academy. The interior can set up any way you want. If you forget the combination, or loose the key for the combination dial, you better know a great Safe Cracker.

two do nots

Don't get the electronic lock.

Don't put it in the second story of a house if you are worried about a fire.

I got a BIG Cannon, could not be happier, got the electronic lock as well, great appearance, inside and out, quality made, fire safe as normal, I think they all will burn inside if in a fire long enough, but its a great safe.

curious about the electronic lock, why is it a do not? I have one and it functions fine, have you had problems? Thanks, Ron Tilley

Do you have to lock your guns away in the USA? We do here in Aus.

If you can find a dealer in your area, it's worth checking out American Security safes. They may be a bit above your budget, but IMO, worth every penny. I too was looking for something under $1K, but figured 6 months down the road, I'd be glad I forked out the extra cash.

My only regret is the one I bought over a year ago is no longer big enough.
